Hey guys finailly tracked down an H55 to help my 75 FJ55 a little. Need a great 85 + Split Case and or a P Brake kit for a split case to make it work.

Local buddy hase the split case but would buy a case/brake if its available. SoCal freeways are just too fast for the 4 speed. Need a little more speed and mileage

Help

Thanks

Good score on the H55, I'm wanting to put one in mine. I see you have 3.70 gears, are your axles FJ60. I have FJ60 axles and going to use the E-brake on the rear axle. Is your Transmission new.

Thanks, Ron

H55

On my 75 FJ55 the diff pumpkins are out of a 60, the H55 is used with 17,000 miles on it. So no rear axel brake available for me. The lower first gear works well with the split case and i'm not doing any extreme rock climbing with a FJ55 I've got lower range if I ever need it. I use the truck here and in SoCal on the freeways you just need to be able to do 70 comfortably to be safe. Everywhere I go to get off road has miles and miles of freeway before and after. I added a H55 to my 60 and it is really great - best addition I've made. Safer and better fuel mileage.

Let me ask you one question. I also have a 55 gal. tank. The PO, mounted it off the frame, with a 2 inch body lift. It's tucked up high. Is yours hanging down, below the frame alot. How to do you like it. I would like to drop mine down, so I can take off the body lift.

Thanks and sorry for hijacking your thread, Ron

HI Bob,
I just ordered and installed the TSM parking brake kit for my recently added split case. It was a little over $300 delivered and I am having a cable made to operate it. That was $55. I have not installed all of it yet. Looks like a nice kit, well made. It hangs down a little. If you don't do hard wheeling, it's prob fine. If your H55 isn't too much longer than your last tranny, then your old brake cable might work. I just put in an sbc with a ranger, so my drivetrain is now a little too long for the 47 inch cable. HTH.

Thanks Sal - that looks like what I've been looking for. I really appreciate it. I've been following your build. You got a great lookin Pig I'm looking up to meeting you some day.

Thanks again.

Bob

No worries. I'll post up a photo when I get it all in. Control Cables in So Cal did the cable. I ordered it yesterday, sent them photos and it's already on it's way.

Did those 3:70's do anything for your highway rpms? Where did you snag the H55. Dang.... almost sounds as cool as that Porsche in your garage....Ha!

Answer

The 3.70s were the pumkins out of a 60 series. Made a big difference in speed and RPMs. I don't do any extreme rock crawling - but wouldn't hesitate to take the Rubicon with 3.70s and the 4 speed i have now. Low range and some experience will get me any place I'd want to take the pig. I understand the H55 has a little bit lower 1st gear and because I have one in a 60 series truck I know what a nice hwy ride it makes. My RPMs dropped about 25% when I go to 5th difference is 2500 RPMs now equals a little more than 70 now where before I was over 3200. I hate the 4.2 at over 3000 consistently. Noise, Gas Mileage and power are all much better. Was lucky enough to pick the H55 up from a guy that had it for a truck in Idahoe but the trans was in Tucson - and the guy was working in the Gulf as oil rig transport helio pilot. He was going to use it on a FJ40 project (Boise). Had about 17000 miles. Only way to find one (H55) is look every day unless you want a new one.

Gas tank I'll have to look to see the drop on the tank - so far no issues? If necessary I can take pics.

Thanks again for your help on the brake. Someday we'll have to meet up - 2012 S&T??? I love Tahoe but SJC is a long way away in a pig. If you head for Mexico let me know.

Thanks

Bob and Sal:
I also needed a longer cable when I installed the Ranger in my Pig. I used a mid-70s FJ40 cable, which is a foot or so longer if I remember correctly. I could look up the part# when I get home if you'd like.
