I know the 95 was the first year for airbags but other than that what was so different from the 93/94 which also had the 1ZF engine and E-locker option? Not currently in the market for a 80 series but you never know.

Per Slee's site:

1993-1994

  • Introduction of 16" wheels.
  • Rear axle changes to full floater with disk brakes when equipped with ABS
  • Also gets viscous coupling HF2AV transfer case versus
non-viscous HF2A transfer case for drum braked 80's (and fj80's)
  • Introduction of 4.5l 24 valve motor.
  • Front and Rear factory lockers become an option.
  • Automatic transmission - Electronic Controlled A442Fwith mechanical lockup converter
  • Somewhere in 1993 the AC system changed from R12 to R134. With the R12 systems the dryer unit was in front of the battery and with the R134 it moved to behind the bumper. Might have been in 1993
  • The thickness of the drive plates on the front hubs were increased after April 1994 (build date). The new drive flange number is 43421-60040 and the old one is 43421-60022. If you try to install an earlier birfield into a later truck, you will not be able to install the circlip on the end of the axle shaft.
  • Supercharger systems now available for 1993-1994 models.
  • Front ABS Lines are routed on the front control arm.
  • Radiator is a 3 row brass core.
1995-1997

  • 1996 saw the introduction of the Lexus LX450 Model.
  • Exhaust system changed from side by side catalytic converters to in-line converters. The exhaust also routes below the frame rail just behind the catalytic converters to avoid excessive heat on the passenger floor-boards.
  • Front grill changed from the word TOYOTA written across the front to the new Toyota symbol.
  • Headlight mounts are different from 1991-1994 vs. 1995-1997 and will not interchange.
  • Redesigned dash board with airbags as standard equipment.
  • Headliner changed to two piece molded units.
  • Emission system on engine changes. Changed from a Mass Air Pressure meter to a Mass Air Flow meter. Certain plumbing was also removed.
  • Supercharger & Turbo systems available for 1995-1997 models.
  • ECU updates and truck became voluntary OBD-II compatible. Fully compatible in 1996 models.
  • Wheel Lug nuts change from conical to washer type.
  • Airbags become standard
  • Automatic transmission changes to the A343F. Some 95's were produced with the A442F. The transmission type is printed on the label on the driver door.
  • 1997 saw the introduction of the 40th Anniversary editions as well as the Collectors Series.
  • 1997 the rear swaybar brackets that attach the bar to the frame were changed from a plate side that attached to the side of the frame to a bracket style that attached to the bottom of the frame.
  • ABS wires on the front were moved upward and no longer run down the front control arm.
  • Radiator is a 2 row aluminum

Perhaps someone could return my white locked 95 to me? I wish :)

Someone found this gem last year, they are out there but as Murf said be ready to pull the trigger.

^^^^ That is a nice one! Oh I am ready! Saturday I just missed a white locked 97 with 160K on Tucson CL for $9K. I was second to contact :(

When I bought mine, a few days later another one exactly like it except lower miles and better maintained popped up in Tucson. I thought briefly about buying it, the "Fun Govenor" chimed in and reminded me that we already have six cars.

I kept the picture of the engine bay as a reminder of the one that got away.

^^^ Made me laugh ...as I always say, as soon as I start looking to buy something, oddly market goes dry. As soon as I stop trying or find something, suddenly the market is flooded with what could have been :)

Well, I've located two potential candidates being sold by individual sellers. Both are non mudders and out of state :( At least they are not rust states. Neither 80 is my ideal criteria, but I've been known to compromise before :)

#1: 1993, White Stock Locked 80, 169K miles, $6,000 - two owners the last of which have owned since 1996. They say - has all service records, and always up to date on service. I don't have yet have specifics details of particular repairs HG, PHH, etc. Supposedly VERY clean inside and out with nothing worth calling out on dents, dings, rips, tears, stains, etc. The father sent his daughter out of state with this one for the last 2 years so he said he had every possible thing the mechanic ever said needed to be done and when it needed to be done.

#2: 1997, Blue Stock Locked 80, 106K miles, $6500 - unknown # of owners but current owner has owned 5 years but only driven it 15,000 miles in 5 years. I am waiting on VIN to get more details to verify. I've spoken to the brother n law who is selling it for the owner who recently had a severe stroke and is unable to communicate. I realize this sounds hokey but after speaking with the brother n law at length I have every reason to believe it is legit and not some scam story. That said, there are quite a few unknowns about the truck and I suspect only way to really know what it is will be an in-person inspection. Brother in law says from what he knows it is cleaner than most and no issues...but we all know what that can mean. He says brother n law fly all over the west to find this one when he bought it 5 years ago. Only issue he can think of is paint clear coat issues on hood.

Any votes for either of these? :)

Where are they? The price of the 93 vs the 97 may indicate the owner does indeed know what he has and is banking on some sort of service history (like your "old" hundred and certainly current) where pride of ownership is reflected, so he is using that to dictate the price or boost it a bit.

Both Being from non mudders, I would be rather inclined to agree with Medtro, on up to date meaning oil changes, tire rotations and maybe an air filter, but that could be a gross generalization.

The VIN and the Toyota owners site could whistle a markedly different tune. Someone once told me, the definition of Pristine widely varies and a trip to California was needed to substantiate the differences and sear the experience. Some people are indifferent and will unfortunately say anything to move along something they are interested in ridding themselves of.

Maybe you should just "think" you bought one and the unicorn will surface locally. OR try a different approach. Start putting notes on really nice 80s, a synopsis of why you'd be a great buyer, maybe it'll shove someone off the fence, sure a bit sketchy sounding but cruiser owners would probably "get it" Couldn't hurt. Start with the neighbor.

Send me vins if you need a carfax pulled on them

Now that's funny right there! :)

Thanks Murf. I had an available carfax so I ran it on the 97.

The 93 price has now increased by $500 due to a local buyer...so the makings of a bidding war. This is the second time i've encountered this strange bid up the offer phenomenon in recent months. No longer interested in that one.

The locked 97 with 106K miles is going to require a verbal commit to buy (hold) and a trip to Orange County to inspect. Always the possibility it is riddled with problems but no real way to find out without making the trip or getting someone local to check it out.

  • Looking for a nice clean in any non dark color, prefer white
  • prefer stock, but mild builds also considered but not looking for beat trail rig (not that there's anything wrong with that)
  • prefer 150K miles or thereabouts
  • lockers - why not, but not mandatory
  • budget - up to $8900
PM me if you know of anything or your rich neighbor wants to make room in their garage
Thanks
JT

It's not white, it's got more miles that you're hoping and the front leather is unknown (I've never taken the fuzzy seats covers off) but I'm selling it for a sum cheaper than you've budgeted. Here is the link for the Salt Lake City posting: https://www.ksl.com/auto/listing/1898071?ad_cid=1

If you're going to look remotely, try eBay. Sellers usually include a boatload of pics and go out of their way to point out the flaws. You also have some recourse if It's not as advertised.
