I spent some time knocking some rust off the block with a drill and wire wheel. I think in one small spot it got a little close to the deck. Would anyone here beconcerned about this area circled in red?You may have to zoom.

No. The engine is only out because it came from another truck to be a donor for mine. I'm just doing the HG and various seals before it goes in.
I would recommend getting the block and head decked if you already have it all apart.

The problem with that is I didn't plan to do any bottom end work due to shortness in both money and skill.

can you take some more pics? Is that outside of where the head gasket sits?
Looks like its inside of where the headgasket sits but outside of the fire ring. You will be fine. The factory gasket has a grey coating on it that will seal that area, if your really concerned get some copper spray from permatex and hit it with that. I would just stick a new OEM gasket on it. BTW don't go cleaning your piston tops with them still in the motor.
