The Wintery Mix went from suspect to STELLAR in just a few hours. Friday we arrived around 4pm (wife, granddaughter, myself) at outpost with Clayton in tow in his blue 60. Fueled up, bought passes and headed to campsite.
Got camp set up...fire started and then got a text from ChsG8R...he would be at outpost in hour...so headed out to buy some firewood and pick him up.
Retrieved him and his father along with wood and got back to camp to see Jamie and his wife talking with mine around the fire. We had a nice visit that evening with everyone and got the fire roaring as we put some venison chili in a dutch oven for dinner.
A couple beers, couple bowls of chili with crackers and everyone was heading off to slumber.
Later Friday night it started raining and continued to do so until about 7am....temp dropped into low 60s and some wind but the amount of rain we had discouraged everyone slightly.
We showed up at Outpost at 9am as mentioned by Kenny as the meet time for ONSC....9:20am and nobody.....9:35am and Jamie shows up and also Meatball in is white FJ40...followed quickly by DBENKE in his 62. Rumor had it that quite a bit of spirits flowed well into the morning hours and not likely they would make it to trail.
I know the ONSC guys live right up there but we did not drive all the way from MB and Charleston to not wheel....so talked with Jamie and decided we would try Falls Dam....and if it goes good then maybe something else.
So off we went..slippery, tricky, and fun and the rain and slickness made a moderate trail more enjoyable for us veterans.....and maybe a bit nerve wrecking for newbies. LOL
After we were done we decided to tackle Dickie Bell....figuring we would winch our way to top or slide our way to bottom. LOL
We had a few issues as one of our group of 6 was open/open and needed some help....but did very well...figured it was a mix of nearly stock vehicle and low experience in this environment wheeling. That is what we are all for and with some encouragement, guidance, and a jerk strap or two...everything was good in the world.
Dickie Bell was a bit of a challenge for most....DBENKE had a little trouble in his locked 62 as everything was slick and Dickie Bell may in fact be tougher now than it was a couple years ago and warrant a new rating...hahaha. Jame went up with little to no trouble in his 100 series...the DT headers and exhaust sounded good going up and crawling through the loose stuff.
CharlestonG8R had some issues but made it pretty good until a turn got him straddled with wheels in air on opposite sides. Some work and he was free and able to go up quite a bit more....and then a tow up the final crest by Jamie and his thunderous 100 series fixed it.
The white 40 went to the left...but found the deep/steep ledge too much for his FJ40 with open diffs....he gave it a hell of a try but had to submit and go to the right like rest of group. While he was backing down I approached and made it to the point of concern for everyone....spun a tire...backed up...turned to passenger more and then walked up the face all the way to the top. Of course I had to brag as there was a slew of Jeep people standing around and they had forgotten Jamies and DBenkes walk up with little trouble themselves....so out I went and said, "So what was taking you guys so long on this one...bunch of pussies...let a Lexus show you all up and make it look easy!!!!" Everyone had a good laugh...as we got meatball rest of way up as well as Clayton in the 60...
Clayton busted a motor mount...same place I did in the 60 3 or 4 years ago before I sold it to him......so must be something about Dickie Bell and motor mounts.
Anyhow...we were done around 1-2:30pm...went to outpost and ate lunch and everyone pretty much had enough fun for day...it was great time but slippery and we were needing to do some things before going to barn that night.
Everyone headed out that afternoon except myself......Jamie was in campsite with his camper...and DBenke stayed at barn. Marinated a bunch of venison tenderloin....headed to barn and had a great meal and cooked the tenderloin med rare for everyone....and enjoyed meeting some new people and talking again with some not seen in couple years....Brian and family, Al, Ryan, Kenny and his wife, etc.....Granddaughter got filthy playing in grass and dirt with Lilly and Ella and all the pooches running around.
Went back to our camp while they did Dirty Santa...got things going for the temp drop as were expecting 32-34*F Saturday night with rain/sleet/snow. Got a big fire going.....and had a few beverages and hit the tent around 10pm.....rain held off until morning but started as I was prepping camp to come home....so stuffed it all in back without folding as it was wet now anyhow....and headed back to Charleston after gas and breakfast at outpost.
Great trip...and in spite of the wet trails had an outstanding time with everyone that wheeled with us. Great food and fellowship at Barn...as always....and would not change a thing other than have a few more Swamp Fox members attend with us....Bessinger, Excessive, Moses, Glen, etc....maybe next time. We had C camp at the group camp..and Saturday night I was there all alone...nice and quiet and private other than Land Rovers in A site and Jeep guys in B but they were all very nice and same guys that we saw on Dickie Bell that day actually.
If anyone has any pictures or video feel free to post it in this thread....I will load some of mine later. Thanks again and what a great time was had in spite of weather....
CharelstonG8R had a little rash though....tailpipe missing, bumper took a hit, and his sliders got their moneys worth...hahahaha...but hopefully he is psyched for next time.
Thanks again for making this a very enjoyable trip....here are a couple pictures:
Starting group...LtoR TRDSparks (100), Brock (100), ShermanFJ62 (60), CharlestonG8R (80)....soon joined by DBENKE and Meatball but no pics.
On the trail.....slippery, wet, clay....NICE!!!!
During the break before starting Dickie Bell...notice Meatball and Dbenke in group now...great having both of them with us.
At end of day...no damage, fairly clean despite all the mud and such....airing tires back up and getting things ready to go to Kenny's family barn later. My granddaughter having some fun as well...
