Winter tread for my BJ74

Finally got my new winter tires. Had to order tires and rims because no one could get what I wanted locally. As I am sure you all know winter tires in larger sizes are few and far between.

I went with studded Firestone Winterforce LT's in the 285/75-16 size and procomp steel modulars in a 16x8 with 3.75" backspacing.

Does not look as cool on the smaller winter tires but then again getting in an accident doesn't look very cool either

Studded tires were disallowed in Ontario back in the 70's I think, I don't think they are allowed in Quebec either, for my own curiosity what other Provinces allow/disallow studded tires?

First highway trip on the new tires this morning and it was glare ice. Their were at least 10 vehicles in the ditch on my 50 km commute. The difference in handling was night and day over the MTZ's. These tires really stick to the surface and being 10 ply E rated tires with 50 psi make for very stiff sidewalls, which are much more predictable in the ruts and grooves of the road.

I have run these tires here in New England and loved them. The added benefit is that they are almost half the price of other winter tires like blizzacks etc... Not that you can get those other tires in a size anywhere near 33"

The other tire that I have considered to run is the Good Year Dura Trek.

Your tread pattern looks different than that of the Winterforce on Tirerack.com

Nokian, Blizacks, even CT ice radials are night and day over conventional mud or "winter" tires.
i stick them on in Nov and take them off come spring melt. in Alberta it wasn't so bad but here, the slush, ice, snow can go from "not an issue" to "holy crap" in a couple of hours.

your life and health are worth more than the $600 - $1500 invested.

Yeah I know, that is the design I though I was getting but it turned out that pic is of the lighter version winterforce UV. They must not have had a pic of the LT's as they have only been around since 2010

Studded ARE ALLOWED in Ontario from November to march. They have to be the non spiked kind.

Checked with our tire guy here in Ottawa, he says they are not allowed in Eastern Ontario, but he said there was talk a year or two back about allowing some sort of softer stud (non steel) upwards of North Bay, but he wasn't sure what became of it. Too bad, would of liked a set on my pick up.
