I have a 71 FJ40. The windshield wipers stopped working. I need to fix this before Sat.

Any suggestions on which wires to check for power and how to check to see if the motor is out.

Thanks A Lot

First things first, check the fuse.

Then, look at the wiper motor mechanism. Check the exposed contacts and the plug for being clean/tight. Get some electrical contact cleaner spray and go to work at the motor.

Next, pull out the switch and check the connections for being clean and the wires for being loose/broken.

Check the obvious stuff first. It is doubtful that the wiper motor is bad.

Jody.

remember to actually CLEAN the fuse contacts when checking the fuse...

I spent 4 hours tracking down a brake light problem and was about to try to pull out the brake switch on the pedal (have you ever tried that? ...ughh..) when I accidentally moved the fuse in the fuse block......

the brake lights started working....

I felt.... well..... dumb. :slap:

Check the wires that go through the windshield frame to the windshield wiper motor. Sometimes those get pinched or broken.

Thanks for the replies.

None of the fuses looked broken but upon further inspection 1 of the fuses was broken. One end just fell off, guess it just corroded.

So this that do the trick? Wipers wiping?

wipers are wiping now

Taking them out and cleaning them made me notice that one of the fuses was corroded at the end (something that could not be seen without taking the fuse out)
