I wouldn't pay more than $300 for an aftermarket windshield. I had one done in my driveway by a local NOVUS franchisee. Pro job with an assistant at my house for $230. Pilkington Glass.

Inspect the glass before the install and if it has visual problems ask for a different piece. I've never had a problem but the guy always shows me the glass before the install so I know he is thinking about it. Unfortunately here glass replacement is every 2-5 years.

I paid $217 for my PGW glass and labor.

Get it filled and sealed before it spreads in this heat. That's how I got into this predicament in the first place. Got the rock chip one day and it spread half the length of my windshield the next day after being parked for 2 hours in the mid-day S. Alabama sun. Keep it parked in the shade or under cover until you can get it repaired.

OEM costs 5x what a replacement aftermarket costs, still breaks when a rock hits it (as evidenced by the mountain of windshield replacement threads), and some dealers - and those glass shops they outsource to - have jacked the installation. The only thing to check on aftermarket glass is to check for waviness before installing, and make sure the installer knows what they're doing. I can't see OEM as ever being a justifiable replacement, even if you have the cash to burn, because the extra $1300 could be used in better places on the cruiser rather than a logo on a corner of a piece of glass. YMMV

:meh:

Good point. I had to call the glass guy out a second time because of wind noise from the seal. Got it right the second time. As already noted, make sure they know what they are doing.

Optically clear is my point about OEM. I cannot believe what a ****ty piece of glass my PPG windshield is.
True, that is the risk. But for $1300, I can arrange to be there when it's being installed and inspect for waviness and accept/reject on the spot. That is one thing you should plan on doing if you go aftermarket. Having said that, I have nary a ripple in my Pilkington, just as good as OEM, except there's no big honking cracks in it!

Just had ours replaced a second time a few weeks ago.

This time we used Techna Glass - locations in Nevada, Utah and New Mexico.

Quality install and clean glass.

No complaints...so far.

You know I am at the point where I may just eat the money and have my local dealership do my next install. Why? Well I had the local glass guy at my dealership do the install on my 80. Told him I wanted PPG or Pilkington installed he said no problem. $250 bucks for Pilkington to be installed and I supply the gasket because they do not use OEM and after all I wanted a genuine Toyota gasket. Long story short my windshield leaks and they wont reseal it because I chose to use a genuine Toyota gasket, so they wont warranty their work. This is bull in my opinion because I even kept the dam gasket in the Toyota packaging so the could see it was genuine and not some napa special.

Many, if not all dealers sub out their glass work.

The PO had Pilkington put on... No wind noise from it. No warps and looks good When clean

All seven dealerships I talked to used a local shop or Safelite for their glass replacement...only one could tell me who the glass manufacturer was.

I ended up going with a local shop that was referred to me by a member of the local Cruiser club. They used PGW or Pilkington for aftermarket, gave me a reasonable price when I asked about OEM glass, had no problem answering my endless questions and let me watch the whole process. I learned a lot and had a great experience.
