Safelite tech in Sacramento must've been drunk. He installed my new windshield with 3 rivets, 1 screw and just filled the rest of the holes with windshield sealant.

My safelite mobile tech here in Maui did a much better job. I watched him from start to finish. He said things like "looks like someone ran a bead of krazy glue or something across the top here," while looking at me as if I was the one who did. Nope. All safelite of Sacramento.

So while my initial safelite install was garbage, I'd still recommend the company as today's windshield cost me $0. They fixed their mistake without any paperwork or bull****. I'll test tomorrow in the car wash how well this one was installed, but it looks much better than the last one.

Glad you got it fixed. It's a headache when someone installs one improperly. Not only does it need rivets, but it needs the right sized rivets especially after someone shoots screws in the a-pillar.

FYI: Just make sure silicone sealant is NEVER used to seal the windshield; its cheap but nasty for this application. I experienced this first hand and fortunately got, just by chance, a seasoned and very experienced Safelite installer that not only has done dozens of Land Cruiser windshield swaps but also taught me about the negatives of using silicone sealant in this application.

It is corrosive and will accelerate rust corrosion of the underlying metal surfaces. Several threads about same...on MUD and all over the internet.

Yeah. My installer was telling me that they aren't allowed to use silicone. Said it wasn't the right stuff for whatever reason (your reason sounds good). My windshield wind noise seems to have gone away with the new glass. That's a good sign that it was done right this time. Waiting on tags before i run her over to the car wash.

So what are the elements of a quality install: rivets, something other than silicone, what else?

I need to replace mine again, and the last one (from an installer used by Lexus) had an air leak and then later a water leak.

I believe neutral cure silicones are fine, just not the acetoxy cure silicones (will attack metal during the curing process). GE silicone II is an example of a neutral cure, while GE silicone I is an acetoxy cure silicone.
