I'm getting a lot of rust on the bottom of one or two of my doors on the inside. What it looks like is happening is water is leaking down into the door and coming out of the drain holes/seams at the bottom of the doors. Anyone else have this problem? Any idea on how to check for exactly what seals are leaking without pulling the interior pannel off (yes, I'm lazy, and to top it off, I have other stuff to do)

I'm thinking that the only seal that's leaking is the one that runs along the bottom of the window - is that easy to replace? anyone else done it? (Or is there some other seal on the inside of the door that I may not know about that could have gone and is causing all of this?)

yulp im in that boat. but im pulling my doors and restoring them(i.e. grind, weld, paint) the inside of them anyways.... I HATE RUST!!!!!!!!

mine is doing the same thing too. i am finding rust from it as well. is it the seal at the bottom of the window or the weatherstripping around the top part of the door or both? looking at the weatherstripping on mine, it looks like it could be replaced.

Toyota tried to keep the water from entering the inside of the door, but the weatherstrip and seal were not up to the task. I have restored 2 doors already and to do it right the skin neads to be seperated from the door. There will be hidden pockets of rust where the skin wraps around the door shell that you just can't get rid of. If that is not an option at least grind all of the seam sealer off the inside of the seam(skin and door shell), and then chem dip to clean out any rust underneath.
My last set on my 62 went to a sandblaster first and then were chemical dipped, to try to get any leftover rust. Within 1 year, 8k miles, and being parked in a garage, rust was starting to appear through the seam sealer. If you can get it all, keep the weep holes along the bottom of the door skin open. Mine were clogged with all kinds of gunk, keeping the water in the door.
Good luck.

One thing you could try is it to spray oil on the inside of your doors. The PO for my truck oiled down all the inner sheetmetal cavities. It's one of the reasons my truck is in great shape. Does still have some rust spots but they are marginal and fixable. Oil would be one possible slowing agent for existing rust, too. Won't stop it completely, but it will arrest the progress significantly. Wagonner's recommendation is best ... but then again if your looking for a quick and dirty solution ... oil it is ...

water inside the door....hmmmm, most likely a bad window sweep. sounds like water is getting past the sweep and dripping down into the door cavity causing the bottom of the cavity to collect sediment and hold moisture, promoting corrosion of the door.

easy fix: remove all of the hardware from the door panel, pop the panel, remove the vapor barrier and you now have full access to the inner door cavity. pull the door glass and then you can service the window channel, the window sweep, the door lock, and the window regulator. the sweeps are tabbed and easy to remove by bending the tabs out. Service and/or replace your window regulator while you're in there - you'll be amazed at how much easier your window operates afterwards. if you get stuck, the Toyota Body & Chassis manual has an excellent description on how to R&R the doors.

I knew it couldn't just be me. I'm going to grind out what rust there is, and hit it all with some sort of rust converter. I think the weep holes are plugged up at this point...maybe I'll add a few and see if that helps...
