Winch won't free-spool

Warn XD9000i, handle turns hard and it will not freespool.
Where do I start looking?

Mine's a completely different model but first thing I'd check is to ensure that when the mounting bolts are tightened down that it's not causing both ends to be drawn towards each other putting the spool in a bind. That's what fixed mine.

Recently had the same issue with my X8000i. Pulling the handle side off and regreasing it had it working great in a few hours.

Recently had the same issue with my X8000i. Pulling the handle side off and regreasing it had it working great in a few hours.

I pulled it apart last night and started cleaning it up. What did you use for grease?
The stuff from the factory looks a lot heavier than wheel bearing grease.

Use disc brake bearing grease. It's slightly thicker than regular wheel bearing grease, and it will perform wonderfully.

I used bearing grease.

Have it all back together and it free spools very nicely.
One of the solenoids fried when I was winding the rope back in.
Always something. : (
