I have a warn winch an 8274 that I bought used, it was dragging in the pulling direction but worked fine in the reverse direction. now it will not work at all in the spool in direction, there is voltage getting through the relays so I don't think their the problem, you think brushes or just get a new motor, and if the motor can I upgrade to the 8274-50 motor, the serial numbers are gone from the housing but it is the newer style. Let me know what you think, Larry

I would remove the motor and take it to an auto electric shop. A new motor is 175-200, IIRC. The shop won't charge much to diagnose. Mine was $15 to inspect, test and lube.

I'll bet it's a solenoid problem, only because that is so common. All 4 have to be good for it to work. You can test the motor yourself-Poser can give the specifics, but basically you energize the field coils directly with a jumper cable and make sure the motor spins. If it does, then you know you have a power supply problem, usually the solenoid box. I wouldn't buy a new motor yet, or even take it apart without more diagnostics.

You might be right, I'll test that but the lower seal is leaking as well so I think I'll have it checked it was full of crap in the motor, so I'll have the motor checked replace the seals and test the motor. Gears all looked great so I'm encouraged, might put a coupla of holes in it for adding and checking lube while I'm there, winter wheeling is almost upon us here as well as hunting season, tough to drag the Elk with no winch, Larry

How do come to that conclusion? I did the test described in the Pirate forum where you add a jumper and put the power to the opposite poles and one direction worked and the other didn't, I would suspect that something in the motor is open and that is why it won't work, if I'm wrong tell me why, thanks, Larry

The brake might be FUBAR'd. Easy to check.

Ed, I tested the motor off the winch, the brake works great, I did the test I described above with the motor out of the winch only the top of the case attached. No worky in one direction, I think I need a new one. may take it to the auto electric place here and see what they want to rebuild it, cheers, Larry

I picked mine up for $400, including a warn bumper. It was local, so no shipping. However it was full of water. I took the whole thing apart, bead blasted all the gears, put in a lower kit and rebuilt the brake with the newer disc style and replaced the control box because it had an assortment of solenoids.
As mentioned, I had the motor checked out. Now I have about $700 in it, but I got to get intimate with it, too:D

Got pretty close to what a new one would cost, though.

BTW, the bumper, cable(almost new) and the roller fairlead are for sale. I went synthetic.
