Was wondering how much is enough of a winch for an FJ60, was thinking of a 10,000 lb. Is this enough or can I go smaller?

Minimum 8k. Al lot of guys run 9.5's and 10's

I would not go smaller... of course you can double up on the rope/cable but I've gotten into a few places where a single line pull on my 9k warn would not move the 60.

I found a used Warn M12000 winch on craigslist a few years back. It fits in my ARB bumper with one little trim spot 4" by .5" on one side. So if you plan on an ARB in the future then the M12000 is the biggest I'd go for fit. I cannot offer experience on using it as I haven't had to use it yet.

Harbor freight Badlands 12k for $299 with coupon +$50 2 year unlimited warranty and $50 for mounting plate.

Works great but if you're going to use it a lot I'd probably run the Warn.

Tuff stuff has similar price, is water proof with a 3 year warranty. But like you said, if you're gonna use it a lot then ho with Warn

What about the 8274? I've got a Warn bumper and apparently the only winches that fit are the 5k lb one I've got and the 8274.

In my opinion, the 8274 is underrated as an 8000 lb. winch, not to mention that it is dead easy to upgrade - the 9.5XP motor drops right in and is more than twice the hp of the original.

I've seen those types of upgrades, just didn't know how difficult, or reliable, they were. Prices seem to be all over the place, I found one for $400, think I might go check it out.

whatever you decide make sure it fits the bumper you want. Warn is the best. But be aware, the
dimensions are different. The VR series are an easy fit to all the winch bumpers. The CTI winches have
a longer motor and my be a problem with offset. Same , but not as severe, with the9.5xp. The 10, 12 and 15, and 16500 lb M series have a large motor on the opposite side and are 2.5" ~3" deeper than the other planetary winches. Before spending go to Warn's site and study their specs including amp draw and
cable length

FWIW, I have a Titan 12k that I got for less than an 8k Warn. Titan gets great reviews and it fit just fine on my bumper, which I believe is an old-style Warn (no integrated lights).

I don't think that all winch companies rate the same. So a 12K from company A may not be comparable to a 12K from company B.

That being said, I have always liked Warn winches. I personally will take a used Warn over a new cheap brand. They've never let me down over many years. And I also agree with 1911 that the 8274 is under-rated. Plus, the extra line length make it easier to double up the line. JMHO.

I have always used a 9.5XP. It drags my overloaded machine around nicely (6400lbs loaded and fueled), and I carry snatch blocks for gravity or tricky pulls.

You might look into Come Up winches (unfortunate name). It is a modified design of the Superwinch, which has the huge advantage of a progressive brake system (so the brake becomes more effective and heat disappating (sp) as you would spool out down hill for example). They price it under warn and above the rest of the pack because it is a more premium and well built unit.

My '85 pickup will get an 8k Comeup when it is back on the road.
