Well my "New" winch cable arrived today, 150ft of 5/16" of WARN's finest with the added benefit of being imported...haven't checked to see how radio active it is yet...
Question, it's normal for cable to glow in the dark...right? (Yeah I know Korea isn't Japan).
Also I thought it would fit better on the winch

any tricks to putting the cable onto the winch?
Not real surprising, they have been buying scrap steel from the US and everywhere else for decades. They pretty much destroyed the rust belt back in the late 70's IIRC.
Not really, just make sure you are winding it on the right way, ie. pulling the cable "in" when the lever says it should be pulling in. Gets real confusing if the cable is wound "backwards" and you want to spool in and it spools out and vice-versa.
Also keep tension on the cable as you are spooling it. So either anchor the 40 and pull the 80 or probably better to pull the 40 to the 80 while keeping tension on the cable. If you can, find a slight incline and get someone you trust to "drive" the 40 while you guide the cable on.

I know that So. Korea is one of the leading steel producers in the world, but I was just surprised the Warn was sourcing their cable from there. Kind of makes the "Buy American" thing harder when the American companies outsource. Not trying to get into a big political thing, just making an observation. Considering the "offshore" cheap winches have been given a hard time about being from China and such.

I can't remember the guys name that was at the meeting but he suggested clamping the wire between two blocks of wood. That sounds like a method I'll be trying when I re-spool this year.

I don't quite understand the method?
To add friction to the line as its pulled through the fair lead. atleast thats what I think.... but then you cant guide it in if the wood is butted up against the fairlead?
Go to a high school parking lot (are any other vacant lot) that slopes up hill a bit. Attach a tree strap and shackle to the concrete base of a lamp post or anything else and winch the truck up hill in nuetral. Thats how Ive always re-spooled mine. A tree strap around the concrete base of a lamp isn't going to damage anthing so I doubt you will get yelled at by anyone. If so, just do what jack said with the 40 and 80!
Warn recommends that you "spool wire rope under a load of atleast 1000lbs" the first time you spool it on.
How much did you pay for the new cable? Should have said something cause I have two brand spanking new warn 5/16" cables hanging on the wall in my garage!
