I've got an ARB going on the truck as we speak, I knew I needed a new platform for the winch. I think you're right Canucksafari, I think I should drop the 400 before Bj70_guy does ;) BTW, if I ripped apart a winch on the kitchen table whether the boss was home or not I'd be a dead man. I do have another question for you guys, do you think it would be worth it to get a 12v 8274 and put a new 24v motor in it. There are a couple 8274's on craigslist. I mean, if the motor is $280 and the solonoids are $20 each, would that not be another option for us 24v guys looking for a used 8274?

the winch may just need a few connections cleaned or it may work as is.
I don't know

i just changed my 8274 from 12v to 24v cost me 200 for the motor had to have the shaft from the old changed over. and 25 ea solenoid. bought the winch for 400.

Are you guys replacing the 12V with Warn parts (motors and solonoids) or just aftermarket like the stuff you see off of e-bay? If not, is the quality as good? Eg, are they "Mat" proof? I see 24V solonoids which are cheap all the time on ebay. However, I doubt they would stand up to the bashing or water a marine grade solonoid would take. Would make me wonder about the motor as well. Also, are the 12V and 24V shafts of different strength? I know a DC can put out a lot more torque the higher the voltage .

i got marine solenoids and had the shaft from the 12v motor swaped to the 24v motor. the old owner of the winch never used it. the winch was a fashion assesory. silly 40 series owners :D

I've decided to go with a working 24V 8274 with new cable i found at a electric shop. It's got a huge motor they put on it, like 4.6hp. I don't think I'll ever get stuck. I should have it on the truck next week. And BTW is anything matt proof? (sorry matt)

Well, hydaulics work well even when soaked. This would be especially important for certain club members. Upside down  You must have a story you want to tell.

Many stories to tell... some would require beer, however.

I have a bunch of winches sitting downstairs including a couple of 24V 8274s, a 24V M8000, a few hydraulics and some 12V 8274s (none of the electrics are for sale, so please don't ask). I even have a few PTOs... those, however, are for sale.

I firmly believe that your best bet is a 24V 8274. They are fairly fast, so use a snatch block.

And, yes, they do work upside down, as well as under water, and on their side. But I have not test my winch either upside down or underwater or both.

Now I see why it's so hard to find a nice 8274, you seem to be hording them all:D. Maybe we'll have to swing by one day, bring some beer, you can tell stories, and we might get you liquered up enough to sell a nice 24V winch.:hillbilly:
