I am researching winches for both my FJ40 and my son's dodge (he buried it up to the axles in mud last night- wrecker to get it out!). The tabor warn winch is about half the price of their regular line- besides the slower line speed, is there anything negative with them? Thanks for your real world comments in advance.:)

For an FJ40, the Warn 8274 is the MacDaddy. It really is the only winch you should consider on a 40.

I'm not sure how I feel about the cheaper Warns (Tabor). I'd run one if I was given one, but if I was buying, I'd probably buy a real Warn. I have held a Tabor 12k in my hands and it is physically much smaller than my Warn 12K and holds significantly less cable.

I know those off-shore winches are tempting due to price, but Warn customer service has gone above what they needed to do for me (free parts for a winch I bought used) and I would never run another brand of winch. Warn is a first class operation with excellent products.

Harbor Freight winches are likely fine for a pull or two, but when any part of it breaks, you may as well toss it in the garbage and buy another. Customer service is not their strong suit. Same goes for all those Chinese winches! I saw a 9.5k winch at Costco recently for $350 or so. Probably the same as the Harbor Freight winch with a different paint job.

Oh now, that isn't true. Harbor Freight will replace most any of their things that you bring back broken without even a form to fill out, and for those things not covered by their liberal replacement policies they offer a cheap ($9.99) Lifetime warranty that's hard to beat.

Somebody in outfitting once linked to a jeep forum where many owners gave high marks to the HF 8000 lb. winch that was then being sold on sale for $299. One or two of them even said that they'd had call to use their HF winch. :)
