used my winch for the first time today....Had to winch some trees up a steep embankment....Worked like a charm. If the load is getting close to the limit will the engine bog gown at all? I put some load to it but, am taking it easy add I become more familiar with it....I was using the hand throtte at about 1K RPM and the engine never bogged down at all.....I used predominantly 1st gear but also used 2nd and 3rd when the hard work (clearing the lip of the embankment) was done.....

Does it not have a "shear pin" to protect against overload?
 
It does but I'm wondering if the engine will strain at all before/approaching an overload condition. It would be nice to press the clutch before breaking a shear pin.....
 
Than you will never know if the shear pin works. Aren't you curious? :D
 
I have broken a shear pin on my FJ40 PTO in the past. The winch heads look to be the same as whats on my BJ74. Replaced the pin like most people with a finishing nail, on my FJ40 PTO. It never broke again. On the 2F yes I could get the engine to know it had a load, but never stalled it with as low of an idle it had.

A buddy used his back in the day to recover a full size ford in the snow up an embankment. He chained the rear of his 40 to a tree, then went at it with his PTO. (Shear pin was a nail) The truck went hard on the bumpstops as the suspension collapsed under the load. You could hear the cold riveted frame making popping sounds as it pulled up that truck. Never stalled it pulled that huge rig up the hill and back on the road. He also swore to never do a pull that hard again to his truck. (That was an F motor in a 73 FJ40)
 
i would not recommend winching on the PTO in 3rd slow and steady is best.

also wind it out and in again under steady pressure after usage as they tend to PINCH under load and make pulling it out very very difficult

1000 RPM or a little more is nice make sure it is not going to stall stalling under load is never pleasant. Also winching into a BANK etc is never smart make sure the wheels can climb up (so make sure your winch cable positioning will allow it to come up and not be pull the vehicle down further into the obstruction and then out before winching else PTO Xfer cases etc will EXPLODE
 
I've spent a lot of time operating big 30-75 ton chain driven PTO winches at work. They are run in high gear because you can actually feel the heavy pulls in the strain on the motor and chatter or shutter on the driveline / chain The problem with running the winch in low gear is you can snap winch lines and do other damage without even noticing the added strain is on the line. When I ran my PTO on my BJ71 I sheared the factory sized pin even in 3rd gear but I knew I had a good pull going. I probably wouldn't have even had a clue how much strain I had on the line if I was in first gear

True that, Hauling limbs up a steep bank was made possible by having a block about 6' above ground level on a tree set back from the top of the bank....

30-75 tonnes winches a little diffeerent to a LC running a AISIN PTO which are notorious for shafts wobbling (sloppiness in the joints also causes wobbling and vibration issues) when you start using higher gears. Thats why most of us prefer slow and steady.

Winching big logs with my PTO I prefer not to do unless its for a tree for a log bridge - believe in using it only when its needed.

However, these days I have the god winch which is even more potent (PRADO diff ) and the old AISIN winch confined to the workshop floor as just too slow.

I will try and find a video of my god winch pulling they are pretty impressive.

Yeah if their is lots of play and worn parts causing vibration it makes sense to run the winch slower. Yes their is definitely something to be said for "slow and steady" but on the other hand you validated my point that a 13BT in first gear will walk through a winch cable or shear pin at low RPM. For someone with little experience with these type of winches first gear makes it hard to judge how much strain is on the line until its too late.
