After getting stuck in some mud last weekend, I have decided to get a winch.

I Want a Warn winch, but since I have 2 rigs and limited funds, I want to use a multi-mount winch. I've pretty much decided on the Warn Zeon 10,000 though would consider the Warn 9000 XDi.

I'd like to have both a front and rear power receptacle on the trucks, but do have concerns about keeping the contacts from shorting out and potentially burning my truck to the ground.
It looks like the amp drap on the winches I am considering is about 500-600 amps when doing a full weight pull (not that I expect to do that much of a pull, just want the overhead).

I'd like to put the sockets onto a solenoid with a switch in the cab so I can turn them on and off (turn the front on, or the rear) as necessary. I'd also like to set up my jumper cables on the same connector (Anderson power pole connecter IIRC). Any recommendations there?

Though, that said, for the cost of the Zeon 10,000 w/ multi mount, I can get 3 Warn VR8000's...
Any thoughts?

Warn has a rear mounting kit. But I had a 9.5 ti on the back of my rig and used some heavy white that was 129$ for 25 feet. If I were to do it again I'd go with warns kit as it's set up for this and it's priced right for the battery cables alone

Stick with your plans, get a premium warn winch. The VR series is great but its entry level and not the best choice for the long term. You get what you pay for!

Lots of mounting options, warn or otherwise.

Hi all,

I tried the hitch mounted electric winch idea back in the mid-1990s. There are a few "real world" problems with this idea.

1) Class II trailer hitches typically hang low, impacting the approach/departure angle of the vehicle. Driving around with a hitch mounted winch really impacts the clearance!

2) When the rig gets stuck, often it is in the worst spots: mud hole, off-camber, on a hill climb, etc. These are not convenient situations to remove your 75 - 100 lb. electric recovery winch from the cargo area and then install it on the front hitch.

3) I agree with your plan to buy a quality electric recovery winch. I don't think you need a 10K winch for either your 40 or Tacoma. A good 8K winch will be adequate (and you should always try to have a snatch block on hand.)

The Zeon is awfully pricey for what you get. You can nearly purchase two Warn M8000 electric winches for the cost of one Warn Zeon 8K winches:

Most of the 4x4's in my local club are 80 and 100 series 'Cruisers.
If I need to recover one of those rigs with my truck I'd like to have enough winch.
This is why I'm considering a 10k winch. Though I actually have 2 snatch blocks (won them at different Cruise Moab raffles).
