I couldn't get my winch to free spool yesterday. The handle turns very hard but it will not
spool out.
Suggestions on what to look for?
The new winch rope is the balls, Nat was hardly breaking a sweat running it up the hill!
A LOT easier than wire cable!

Lane

Warn 9000,

It is definitely not the rope binding up, having used it a few weeks before
and had no problems.

sounds strange...

How old is the winch? I have a xd9000i and there is no other reason for it to bind up other than the rope (which mine used to do) you can always start taking it apart there simple.Down load a diagram first and call warn they are alot of help.....:grinpimp:That is a GREAT winch I have to say I have tested mine to the limits more than once...Two landcruisers almost straight up with a snatch block. It will pull a house over.......

If it makes you feel any better Lane, my HS9500 is doing about the same thing. I can move the clutch handle back and forth, but the spool will not let me pull the rope out. Even with the clutch engaged and hitting the controller, the motor just spins away inside, nothing happens. Mine happened when I tried to spool it out last winter to yank a car out of a deep ditch, the entire winch was encased in ice, and when I hit the controller switch there was a SNAP and no more movement.

I'll fix it some day...

It lives inside but has been under water a few times. I started to disassemble last night and
found a bit of goop on the inside.
Going to get some degreaser today and clean it then re-grease and put it back together.
I was pleasantly surprise at how simple things are once you start taking it apart.

Don't put sticky grease, i did that mistake and i could hardly pull the cable out. I had to open it up again degrease and regrease with good dow corning moly grease. And not too much

Ok, I took it apart and degreased everything and put it back together. Lubed it
up and put it back together. At first I couldn't get it to freespool, worked the handle back and forth
and finally it worked.
So now a new problem. I've got 40' of rope out and while I'm spooling it back my finger slips on the control
and it goes from "in" to "out" real fast. Hit the control again and it just clicks. Figure it must have fried a solenoid.
So how do I test a solenoid to se if it works? There are 4 in the system, Warn want $252 for all 4.
Can get them on ebay for $75, which is ok, but if I only need one I'd rather spend the money of something else.

If it is clicking then the the solenoids are most likely working. You may have stuck the brake inside the drum by switching directions so fast.

Matt

It still free spools, 3 of the 4 solenoids click for a little bit then they all stop.
I've ordered 4 new ones.

thats to bad lane that winch is fairly new... warn is starting to bring the suck, i keep hearing people having more and more problems with them. If my 12,000lb fails me i will be pissed that thing was not cheap

Yea it's only 3 years old and really hasn't been used to much.
But s*** happens!

I did have the same problem has you when i rebuilt my winch, i didn't post because i could not remember what i did wrong. Now i remember, the piece that is between the motor side and the brake wasn't correctly reinstall. And it jam the brake.

When placing the lever to winch it would jam and solenoid tick tick. if i would place the lever to free spool, the drum would turn really really fast.

That is what I am thinking happened, Not that I want to admit but I have changed winch direction several times, even with a load  and the soledoinds are fine. Using the winch past the duty cycle (approx. 30% by the way) is what usually does the solinoids in.

The way the motor coupler is configured it has to release the brake before it turns the driveshaft for the reduction if the brake is jammed then when you try to power the winch in either direction with the lever engaged nothing will happen (click click). Try to power the winch with the lever in free spool and it may spin the drum at motor speed (no more reduction) with the winch in free spool, this equals a stuck brake.

Time to buy a lot of raffle tickets. There s a winch you know ;)
I plan to!
I will feel a bit bad for the rest of you when I go home with the Poor Wally tub and the winch!
