Yeh, you read it right :)

I am in the process of rebuilding/renovating a Warn M12000 and was wondering if anyone had any knowledge/experience in doing this. Everything is going fine but I am nearing reassembly and was wondering what grease to use in the gear case.

Was hoping some one here had some insight on that issue.

Found the info..

Recomendations were these two
Molylube #1 or Aeroshell #17

Warn's site said Aeroshell #17

Went to Shell's Aviation site and learned this

AeroShell Grease 17

Extreme Pressure Variant of AeroShell Grease 7

AeroShell Grease 7 with 5% molybdenum disulphide

Recommended as a general purpose airframe grease, particularly for heavily loaded sliding steel surfaces where protection against seizure and corrosion is desired, e.g. bogie pivot pins on jet aircraft landing assemblies. It also provides outstanding anti-friction bearing lubrication. Useful temperature range is -73°C to +149°C.

AeroShell Grease 33MS

An Extreme pressure (EP) Grease

AeroShell Grease 33MS is an extreme pressure (EP) grease based on the proven lithium complex technology of AeroShell Grease 33, and is fortified with 5% Molybdenum Disulphide. The benefits of Grease 33MS include: Improved anti-wear and corrosion resistance over AeroShell Grease 17; It is fully compatible with AeroShell Grease 33, so reduces the risks and problems associated with misapplication; Load carrying and EP properties equal to that of the well established AeroShell Grease 17; Fully approved to MIL-G-21164D. It possesses enhanced anti-wear and anti-corrosion properties and is particularly suitable for lubricating heavily loaded sliding steel surfaces, such as, for example, bogie pivot pins on aircraft landing gear-assemblies. AeroShell Grease 33MS is a direct alternative to AeroShell Grease 17, but when changing from (clay-based) ASG 17 to (Li-complex based) ASG 33MS, the normal rules on grease changing should be applied.

Now we know..

I recently re-built my Warn M12000 and used this grease. The Synthetic wasn't too much more $$ than dyno. I think the grease that was in it prior to the re-build was from 1986! (Not much left and pretty sticky).

Motomaster is likely only available in Canada and is your 'name-brand substitute', I certainly don't claim its better than the Shell varieties, but for me, easily accessible.

Don't forget to take apart the brake inside the drum and clean all it's parts too. Mine used to stick on and now it works much better.

AJAE,

I would assume that it shouldn't be brand specific as long as it meets or exceeds the standards for that type of grease/application. In this case being high pressure grease.

Also,

I did remove the brake unit mine was pretty clean. I did though, run some brake parts cleaner over the parts and through the spool to remove the residual break dust.
