I tried searching and there's no FAQ here to help, but I think this is the sort of thing that is basic enough that lots of folks probably have answers for it. I've had a couple of winches in the past, a Warn 8274 on a FJ55 and 6000 lb Warn on a Trooper, both long since sold.

Now I have an 80 series and am starting to consider my winch options. Actual purchase is somewhere down the road. Most likely, we'll be going with an ARB bumper up front, which takes anything up to a 12000 lb Warn.

I know that there are other winches that will likely fit. I also know that people get kind of passionate about winch brands, but I think that's being hashed out elsewhere in multiple threads:deadhorse::D

What I'd like to know is what else fits in an ARB?

Is the bolt pattern in the ARB pretty much a standard that carries over to other bumpers with winch mounts? I know that some bumpers are more restrictive in what you can mount, for instance the Slee short bus. I think this is mostly about the space available behind the bumper for the winch itself once it's bolted on and the solenoids, etc, not the actual bolt pattern. Or am I wrong about this?

Whether it's another namebrand or Harbor Freight winch, I think this info would be useful to others considering their options. If the bolt pattern is pretty much the same, then it's the measurements of the winch itself and how it has to be mounted, i.e. whether it can be "clocked" to reset how the motor sits in relationship to the fairlead that determines what winch fits which mount.

I think most newer winches have a standard bolt pattern, 10 inches by 4.5 inches IIRC. So, one would think that after-market bumpers would match that. I know the 40 series winch plate sold by CCOT has this bolt pattern.

My older Warn M12000 had a different spacing (1986), just my luck!.

Any of the warn 9000lb winches are common and will also fit, included integrated solenoid models. A simple spacer may be needed.

I have a Warn XD9000i on my 80, it is not necessarily what I would pick, but, I already had it.

Many in the 80 series forum like the hydraulic winches as well.

AJAEbj42 is right, most newer winches share a standard bolt pattern. Don't underestimate the weight of the 80.

Thanks guys! That was very helpful.

I'm looking around trying to find a deal on a good used winch or a bargain on a new one. Definitely thinking about something bigger than 8k. I'm pretty good about judging things now that I'm older. I never used the winch on my Trooper for anything except recovering someone else. And I managed to run my Rodeo for 16 years without getting stuck once. Probably a good thing, since all I had was a couple of come-alongs...

Harbor Freight has their 10k winch (#67577) on sale with a coupon in their flyer until Feb. 15. Yeah, I know, it's HF, but at $380, it's tempting. Good to know it'll fit, more than likely, but now I know most anything else will, too.

Don't waste your money on a cheap winch, because when you need it, it might fail and then you're screwed.

Patiently look for a Warn or other quality US-made winch. Used ones are just as good, are re-buildable and so much more reliable than any new overseas manufactured junk.

Just my 2 cents.

X2
Seen way to many problems with electric milemarkers (which I would think are a cut above Harbor Freight) to ever go the cheap route.
