i have been thinking of putting a 4cylender diesel along with a six speed in. is this worth the time and money

What six speed mate

i would get the 6 cylinder diesel if you can... you're not going too fast with the 4 cylinder - really need a six speed transmission?? sorry i'm not help on fitment

check the diesel section they might be able to help

the nv 5600. is this a probable idea?

I looked at doing a T-56 6 speed from a Corvette/ Camaro one time- the challenge I ran into was figuring out how to change the tail housing to something that would bolt up to a transfer case. The t-56 only ever came in 2wd applications. The NV5600, I believe, is in some heavier Dodge products, so it may be possible to source one that came with the NV241 transfer case.

If I understand correctly you would like to put a 4bt Cummins, NV 5600 tranny in your 40? This has been done and it works out well. The NV 5600 tranny is much smother than the NV 4500 and has a great gear range for a 40. It is a great mod that will increase milage to over 30 mpg depending on how turned up your 4bt is. There are several 4bt Cummins forms out there and all of them have some great info.
