Need to upgrade my spare to match the rest. I have a hitch. Will there be enough room for a larger tire. Anyone running 285's in there OEM spare location.

Thanks

Spare tire

Yes they will fit. I moved up to the same size and have my spare under the truck. IIRC a larger size will not fit, but try the search function.

Yes. Just push it back a little as you crank it up.

take off you nob

The only issue I've had is when trying to insert my towing ball. The shaft is long enough that it hits my 285 spare before the holes for the pin line up.

The fix is to loosen the spare tire a little, push the ball into place, insert the pin and THEN crank the spare tight.

Otherwise, it fits just fine.

yes if you have the common valley hitch with the bowed cross bars. if you have the straight cross bar type hitch it may not fit or it may contact your sway bar. if you have a straight hitch i suggest you take off one of your wheels and try and fit it!

I also suggest doing the spare tire mod to get the spare up as high as you can get. I think it's in the FAQ somewhere but basically lifts up the space another 1" or so.

305/70/16 fits too.

285s or 305s are pretty much the largest that will fit in the OEM spare location, IIRC.

I'm researching for my next tires, and I was reading an old post last night about someone who fit a 295/75/16 Terra Grappler in the oem spare tire position with a hitch. Nitto lists this tire as 33.27" dia. and 11.73" width. I don't know the details on which hitch they had. YMMV with different brands since diameters vary, or a different hitch.

Sam, thats "Take off eh" or "Take off you hoser". And you must be wearing a toque when you speak. Oh and "a" is spelt "eh"!

Cheers,

I am so frustrated. Been searching for over an hour looking for the "spare tire carrier" mod and can't find it. Planning on installing 305-70's within the next week or so, and would like to get the spare as far up there as possible.

Can someone post a link to this mod? I remember reading it and now I can't find it. Thanks!

Go to:
80 series tech forum -> Updated FAQ for 80/LX450 ->Modifications -> Increase clearance under spare tire

Bruneti,

Thanks. It was right in my freaking face and I didn't see it.

Anyway, the write up wasn't very helpful. What happened to the pictures? Seems like they were all deleted. ??? All I needed was a picture so I could recreate the thing.

Here's a link to my writeup and pics of the spare tire mod.

It really only lifts the fore-most end of the tire. More like a "spare tire leveler." It does allow you to slide it forward a little more, which helps the departure angle a tiny bit.
In retrospect, the mod is of questionable value, but the investiment is minimal and it certainly doesn't hurt anything.
