Have you had some issues with your 81 Bruce?
I was surprised to hear what kind of mileage you guys are getting - I thought they would have done a fair bit better.

I am not one of those with cash on hand. :frown: If I did have some, I would be looking at this one. You can get a 130,000 rig fresh off the boat and then have to do the turbo, the injectors, and the IP in the next two years. If I was shopping, I would be looking to see if the IP had new seals put into it.

Wonder why it has been on the market for so long. There have also been a couple - what look to be - super clean Safaris that have been up for sale for a while. However, I look at Outback's page and both products seem to be selling and for decent money.

Good deal! Pretty much half of what I paid for mine, closing in on a year now. And Norm, I seem to be getting a steady 20ish mpg mixed hwy/city, my speedo/odo is a little out of whack with the 33's tho.

Dismal, yep

My BJ74 on 37s gets 25% better mileage.

The HDJ81 steadily gets 18l/100km of short winter commuting.

I'm still happy with it though. My comment was just that Greg Malpass' rig is getting to be a better deal all the time. People are scared of the mileage.

I think you better check your mileage with a gps and report back before you go throwing the "G" word around :grinpimp:

I agree. When I got the GPS last month I discovered my speedo was registering 4% more kms than the GPS. So that best fuel milage of 9.6L/100kms was not the truth. Still it wasn't bad - just it wasn't amazing either.

I haven't confirmed with GPS, but with stock tires my rig gets 24mpg (uk gal) highway and around 21 with more city driving. That's around 11.5L/100km for those metric folks. All things being equal, I'd be wondering if something was amiss if I got 18L/100km.

Yep, 18 seems a little high for an HDJ. I usually get around 13-14 L/100 km (corrected for the 35''ers). Not as good as the delica (10 / 100 km) but not too shabby.

And $8500 is a really good price even with 250,000 km. I haven't heard of a lot of problems with the IP seals on these.

Even then it wouldn't be a deterent to me buying it if I had the $. I got a friend who sold me a complete set of OEM seals for my IP for $16. I am sure his supplier in Asia could get the Denso seals for about the same. So, it just a question of preventative maintenance of replacing the seals.

It might just be my imagination, but we seem to see more posts about leaking IPs with the first cold weather each year.

We do, do we?

Jeff, you planning on going somewhere that is truely cold next winter to test your seals (eg. -35C)? Maybe a real Winter Shiver run? Actually I know a guy in Abby with a Denso VE pump on his Surf which started leaking in Dec and it wasn't very cold compared to the rest of the province. It's still parked because that's not the only thing which started leaking.
