I am planning on centering the rear axle in my FJ55. This will require a minitruck rear axle housing and axle shafts. The Idea is to chop the ends of the mini housing off, and slide them into the landcruiser's housing after chopping off it's ends (landcruiser axle housing is bigger diameter).

I would like to use the shafts from a 4x4 IFS truck, and end up with a slightly wider axle, but I think the IFS truck rear housings are a little bigger diameter than a straight axle truck's, and won't go inside my landcruiser's...

So does anyone know if an IFS truck's rear shaft/bearing/flange will bolt up to an '85 or older minitruck housing's flange correctly? Is there anything I would have to change/swap to get the IFS shaft mated to the earlier Housing?
Also, I saw an '87 IFS Turbo truck at a wrecking yard the other day... would it's rear shafts be the same as all the other IFS trucks? I know the diffs are unique to themselves in turbo trucks, as are the trannys, but how 'bout those rear shafts?

AFAIK, Toyota didn't change jack about their rear axle shafts for a looong time. My Tacoma had the same flange as the minitruck ends, and fit right into the diff.

I think you're on the right track.. <'86 mini housing, '86+ shafts, FJ center.

Or ya could just run 1.5" spacers.

so the answer is yes, either make the cruiser housing a bit longer or make the tubes from the older mini housing longer.

Not a big deal at all.

BUT! be awarre that the newer taco shafts , although they have the same flange as the older stuff, May have ABS and that changes the seal position on the axle shaft itself..

Actually, from what I remember, you can use a ABS axle in a non abs housing but you cannot use a Non abs axle in a ABS housing. The seal surface is the bearing retainer, it is not machined into the shaft itself..

This is exactly what I did for mine. I had a later (unidentified year) mini axle that I just couldn't get the tubes to work for, so a friend (!thanks!) hooked me up with a spare earlier mini housing. It all went together great after that.

I did have to make a spacer for one side of my new spring perches because they fell exactly where the joint was welded. no biggie, just measure first and cut the LC center just a bit shorter.

Good luck

Awesome. Thanks guys.
