I know white Line-X is available. Although there is some draw backs having white Line-X (more expensive & will probably show dirt worse than other colors), I would like to Line-X my roof white when I remove the oem racks. Now I'm thinking why not white Line-X the whole vehicle. Has anyone tried white Line-X on part of or the whole vehicle?

My buddy did his FJ cruiser thing (everything but the roof) and it looks alright.....from 10 feet away. Up close it looks like line X.

I'm considering using white on my roof and redoing the lower 1/3 of the body where I did a crappy job with black bedliner.

My 80 has its roof rack and wing removed and covered in white line-x. I kept the support ribs to keep rigidity of the roof and lined over it. Also, my flares are removed and the fenders and lower 1/3 are line-x'd white. I also had the side mirrors done as I always get them hit by tree branches. The line-x dealers will charge you a bit more because they have to purge their equipment with a lot of white to ensure they have no mix from previous colors, it basically doubles the amount of material they use. I have not found the white to get any dirtier than the rest of the truck and cleans up easy. Two things: one, the edge will have a slight yellow tint to it (where they pull the wire to cut the masked off portion of the vehicle). Two, since they won't mask off the entire underbody you will get some overspray on the undercarriage. You get it with black too, you just won't really notice it. To me, these are pretty insignificant, its not a show truck, but some may be bothered by it.

Will you post some pics.

Here are some pics. The first give a perspective on the side. At a distance and depending on the light it is tough to really see the line-x. The second one show the top perspective. You can see the top rails coated over. As far as getting dirty, everything in the 3rd pic came of easy. The liner really protects the sides and top from all the branches and bushes that we have thick on the trails. Another nice feature about white line-x on white is that they can't put the liner right up against the lights, markers, etc. There is going to be a little gap where they pull they mask it and pull the wire through. If you do black, you would have a little white painted gap between the edge of the liner and the light.

Scopedog,
Fantastic looking cruiser. Thanks for the pics & info. I am going go a similar route. If you had to do it over is there anything you would different?

I struggled on what to do with the holes. I did not want bondo. I asked around various body shops about welding up the holes and no-body was interested. I had one guy say that he would but basically said that it was going to be a lot of money due to the time. This matches up with most of my experience with body shops doing non-standard work; they are not interested. They have a business model, which is plug-n-play fixing wrecks on the insurance dime. Anyway, I went with the metallic tape. It works, and expect it to be a good practical solution as the line-x is tough. However, you can see it, especially in the right light and angle. It is not a big deal to me as it is an off-road vehicle. It would definitely not be the worth the $$ to have it welded by a shop. In the end, to do it again, I would have bought a welder and done it myself. I have not welded in years but I am sure I could pick it up quick with the investment in a good welder.

Getting the line-x is not cheap but I wanted it done right and line-x is very nice when done. I think it would be worth finding the right shop. The place I dealt with were great. Great people, they put a lot of effort in to make sure they were getting everything the way I wanted it. They were honest about what they could and could not do. They also had a lot of experience at doing custom work other than "bed-lining." Also, I gave them the vehicle for a few days to make sure they had plenty of time and did not have to rush anything.

One caution I would bring up, is being careful about the clearance on moving doors and such. The line-x adds some width and could cause some interference. On my truck, the only place I had this issue is the top rear hatch. The line-x on the roof and the line-x on the top part of the hatch (covering the holes from the old wing) touched each other at one point in the opening swing. After a few openings it became worn-in and I lightly removed some material at the wear marks.

How's White Holding-Up

Scopedog - wanted to see how your white Line-X has been holding-up? Any discoloration issues? I really want to go this route.

$3500 really
I paid $1000 to have my 80 LineXed charcoal grey, not the whole truck but most of it
They did the DS and PS up to the windows and the hood area
I left out the roof and back
Another $2500 to do the roof and back of the truck even though it is white that still sounds like a high price
I do have to say it is pretty beefy stuff
I took a key to the side of my truck pretty hard and it did nothing barely a mark

Their explanation was they would have to take the doors off and windows out to prevent interference - they couldn't just mask. I ended up doing the entire tailgate, rocker panels, where the fender flares were, front of the hood (like a hood bra), and front. I'm picking it up tomorrow and the total will be $650. would have been $450 if I went with black.

Post pics when you get it
You are going to be very happy
I think they BS'd you a little about removing the doors and windows part that would not be nessesary
Maybe if they were going to do the door jambs which would be just a waste of material and time
I watched my guys prep and mask everything off, pretty much the whole process
I think your guys did not want to do the whole truck so they priced it high to keep you from doing it
Either way the stuff is the nuts:cheers:

They said they had just finished fully coating a dodge truck the week before - so they were basing the price off that effort. I would have done it if the price difference was not exponential - it was certainly a shock to hear what they would charge. They also said it would take a full week to complete. I was originally just going to get my fender flares sprayed and put them back on - like the 80-Series on Proffitts website. These things quickly escalate!

They found out how much off a PITA it was to do the dodge and they said no more
It gets costly quick as does everything with a cruiser
I know that DIY stuff is alot cheaper but the LineX looks so much cleaner when next to a DIY job
You can definitly see the difference
But like you said it is expensive as all get out
Mine was paid for from an insurance claim, you can bet I would have done the DIY route if I had to pay for it myself

Dgurley2000, where did you have it done? I'm in Dallas, actually Grapevine/Southlake area.

Line-X at 75 & Park in Plano. They did a good job, but it's not perfect. I'm going to take it in next week for some minor adjustments. From talking to them, they do a lot of non truck bed work. I got my front bumper and one slider on today. I'll try to take a photo tomorrow after I get the other slider and rear bumper on.

:meh:

DIY was so simple and Durabak laid out perfectly. You just tape with electrical tape over your gaskets and roll it on. Look at how even the texture is in the pic below - that was the case for the entire rig. You just get a bunch of speciality stipple rollers that lay it out evenly.

Spray on requires far more prep in covering exposed surfaces that you don't need to do when you roll it on. Believing you need to spray on bedliner to make it look good is a total fallacy - it's how the shop makes money charging you $100/hr for extra prep that they make up when they spray.

My entire truck looks like this pic in terms of even texture and coverage and it only cost $500 in total for three coats of UV protectant Durabak (3 gallons) to do the entire rig.
