I've done the upper and lower New River, but I hear the Gauley River is where the best East Coast whitewater rafting action can be found.

Anyone been to Gauley? I've heard lots of good stories and want to make a few of my own.

These are this year's release dates:

September 9, 10, 11, 12; 16, 17, 18, 19; 23, 24, 25, 26; 30

October 1, 2, 3; 7, 8, 9, 10; 15, 16

I'm thinking of planning a trip up there to do the 2 day trip. You do Upper Gauley one day, camp that night, do the Lower the next and either take off or camp another night before you head home.

Here's the details:
  • 2 Days Rafting
  • 3 Nights Basecamp Camping
  • Lite Breakfast each Morning at Basecamp
  • Round-Trip River Shuttle Daily
  • Delicious Riverside Deli Lunch on the River Each Day
  • Complimentary Beverages after Rafting Each Day
  • Hot Showers
  • Deluxe Dinner Cookout after Rafting First Day
Cost is between $225 - $275 per person depending on what date you choose. Generally speaking, having 6 people or more is preferable.

If you're interested, respond with what dates would work for you (out of the above)...

Now that I have entered middleagedness, I'm gonna take a pass on any river that requires a helmet to go down. I've done upper and lower new, (one right after a freakin blizzard in May 89), did the Nantahala about 13 times, and got pulled off the ocoee about 10 minutes after we started because of a death/missing person on the river during a hellacious storm. We were supposed to do the gauley the following day, and that was shut down too (seems the rafting company at the time was required to stand down after several "incidents" with their various trips. Seems like the last two trips were enough 411 from the man upstairs that bouncing my head off rocks that are underwater might not be a wise choice.

The funnest Nantahala trip i did was with an Indian coworker that couldnt swim. I convinced him that we should go rafting on our way home from a work trip in TN. Did I mention he couldnt swim at all??? (I should have been a used car salesman, or a pharmacudical rep) We got placed in a raft with a family of 4. They made my captain due to my experience, and the wife lit into the husband after he wouldnt listen to me, and got us stuck on the first two rapids. That was awesome. By the time we got to the class 3 falls at the end, we were a well oiled machine, and the picture turned out great. My Indian coworker took his wife and several of their friends on a trip a couple weekends later, and for some reason, the wimmens didnt have anywhere near as fun a time...they got stuck several times, tossed out of the bot on others, and were politely informed that they would NOT be attempting the class 3 falls at the end, out of concerns for their own safety LOLOL

A couple of buddy's and I usually do this every year. We used to do the upper/lower over night trip with Class VI outfitters. They are called something else now. The last 3 or 4 seasons we run a double upper over night. The upper is where all the major big stuff is.

It is usually only 1 night at base camp when we go. But everything else is correct. Food is absolutely amazing. I am interested let me check with my boys and maybe we can coordinate dates and trips. Be nice to have some fellow cruiser buddies with us.

This was us last year.

Looking at a 9/23 to 9/24 date or 9/30 to 10/1 date. We usually drive up and stay at a hotel Thursday night. Then we go to the Adventure Outfitters spot for staging and gear prep to go to the put in below the dam.

If you go that second week, it could work.

I ran the Upper Gauley 12 years ago on a biggest release day of the year (draining the lake for work) and the previous day was the World Rafting Champship. Words can not express how much adrenaline fun and hard work rafting the upper was.
I have ran the New, Nolichucky, Chattooga, French Broad at 1,500 cfs to 15,5000 CFS (YES, Flood stage) and a few others many times in a raft and Esquif Nitro canoe. The Gauley and the French Broad at flood stage were adrenaline pack paddling and fun with friends. Enjoy and post pictures.
