Hello,Im new to the board, and am looking to purchase a 97 LX 450 with about 98k on the odometer. I noticed for my second test drive that there was a Whining noise from just a few MPH to about 45 then you would not hear it after that. The whine starts of slow then gets faster with speed. Does not matter if your accelerating or rolling down hill. Owner suggest that it maybe a bad tire that was replaced due to a recent blow out. I don’t buy this excuse. Has had 4 new rotors put on. With 3 newer tires. Also How do you tell if this has Locking diffs? I do plan on wheeling this vehicle. Any help to possible causes or known issues would help. Thanks In advance

usually a differential wine will change with engine load, IE louder on acceleration or deceleration, if it is constant might point to wheel bearings, wheel bearings are not difficult to take care of as long as the spindle has not been damaged, worst case if the bearings have spun on their races the spindle may be damaged and you will need a new rear axle housing ($$$$$).

Might be worth it to lift each rear tire and give it a shake and a spin (block front tires and put T-case in neutral to spin the rear tire)

Or purchase a pre purchase inspection by a good mechanic or the local dealer might be a good Idea.

T-case bearing maybe? Could be nothing, could be a simple repair, or it could be a pain. Ditto on the mechanic checkout...

I might keep looking if there are any questions. You are bound to run across a pampered LX450 with fewer miles. Unless everything else about this one is perfect.

Thanks for the great info I called today for a a Mech.check. So I’ll keep my fingers crossed
I wish I could find a lower Mileage one I could careless if it’s a LX450 or LC. It seems in Cali the LX 450 Go for less than the LC despite KBB.
This so happens to be a very clean in and out, and would be an excellent deal providing that the Whine noise is not a major issue. I do perform my own repairs most of the time. But the point was to get rid of RR county headache, and have something a bit more reliable for the wife, and weekend fun off road. If the parts aren’t terrible $ I may just offer even less, and try to do the work my self hoping inturn for a e relatively reliable SUV.
Thanks Again for the great info

I'd put a DVD player back there to stop the whining of them kids.
