you should seriously check out the Thermal Arcs. The 181i is a 3in 1 that is getting some great reviews on the weldingweb forums. Everyone seems to think this may actually push the envelope and give the Millers some pricing pressure (im glad about this) The cheapo chinese tigs havent put any pressure on Miller---but if Thermal Arc throws AC on its big 3in1 units due out in the spring---i think Miller will follow suit with a dynasty like bang for buck tig.. The 181i can run tig (dc) stick and mig. its 220v and can do about everything for your home needs and shows pretty good duty cycle. its going for $800ish with free shipping online and seems like a great little 33lb package that can get er done.
apparently Thermal ARc is coming out with some 110/220v models of the same 3in1 multiprocess versions sometime early spring 2012. May be the models to wait for if you need ultimate versatility.
On the other hand- i have a Miller 140autoset and dont have much problem doing 3/16 to 1/4 in a single pass with a bit of time beveling and some good technique. The 140 can easily run .035wire on gas and get solid penetration and avoid need for flux cored wire.. Best part is this little 110machine can be found used for around $500-600 with a bottle sometimes.
