Hello mudders, I'm involved in some pump jeopardy at the moment. I have a Spanish market 3B diesel 1989 BJ-73 which needs a water pump replacement, but I'm not sure which one to order. Mainly, I have found two variations of pumps; one made up until 08/1988 and one made after. My vehicle is a 1989, and I have found that it sits right on the cusp of many mechanical design changes. Here are the pump designs by Toyota;
1) (up until 1988)

2) (after 1988)

Question is, what are the major differences? They look similar with exception of the mounting surface/gasket. Also, if I have option 1, could I upgrade to the redesign of option 2?. Thanks!

I think the major difference is that one design will not accept a viscous fan clutch. You should check to see if you have the viscous. I don't think there are any other critical differences, might have different holes to plug etc but I think these will mount the same way.

Not a recommendation to buy from here but these links show the two different pumps in more detail.

So it looks like my vehicle does have a fan clutch, but all of my technical references indicate that water pumps from 1989 forward are for non-fan clutch equipped vehicles.... This is confusing, as my vehicle is a 1989 model year. Any ideas?

Thanks @Onur ! My statement about no fan clutch after '88 doesn't seem to be true as I do more research. I also finally found that my production date was 03/1989. As can be seen below, 16100-59105 is for pre-88 models.

So, should I go with 16100-59185 instead?

Thank you all!!

Thank you all!!

I missed the build issue.

Why didn’t you provide your frame number or VIN to confirm? That will be a better way to figure this out vs talking in months and years.

My bad, completely wrong on my side. Will change information to reflect correct information.

Doesn’t help I skipped over the crucial build information! Too much multi-tasking.

16100-59187 is the correct part number.

But you might be able to get away with using -59105 if they are the same Aisin number.

If the gaskets are the same part number then I would suspect the pumps would probably be interchangeable.

I’d contact Cruiser Outfitters in the Utah and go in the Aisin direction.

THANK YOU!! And last question (I promise), do the Aisin pumps come with gaskets?

We would love to help you at Cruiser Outfitters. I think I can safely say we stock more diesel water pumps applications in the US than other? Either way we stock 5 different OEM/AISIN 3B/13BT variants. This might help ID yours.
