I have the alloy tray which weighs nothing i never ever carry a full load only a esky full of beer and a dog and little toolbox with slings n shackles Recovery gear:grinpimp: the heaviest things that goes on the back is a few dirt bikes but i cant ride for another year due to injury on it and should have 105 rear diff and coils in by then:).A mate with a hzj79 got some brand new std rear springs off a new 79 that was getting heavydutys for the mines his std springs have 9 leafs including the 2 fat healper bottom ones but steel tray, his ute is alot more comfortable off road he is running 285 mine being 265 if that helps comfort. My rear springs have less leafs would they have had some removed already or can i remove some ,which one?
thanks

That doesnt look half as bad as some other cruiser utes i have seen. It looks as if some leaves have been taken out already. But if you want to take a few out i would take that ridiculous overload leaf out and the 4th or 5th from the top out.

Make sure your shock doesnt bottom out (not likely) and you trim your u bolts and centre pin

Cool thanks mate, well ill turf that big mother out then give it a shot see how she go's. At what sort of stage or number of leafs left would i start getting axel wrap ,is that what its called? or is this more common with SOA

Crikey !!!!!!!

That bottom leaf is massive:eek: I reckon Gibo is right that has to go first.

Take those to the scrap merchant you will get a small fortune:p

I think its common knowledge, but I always use the front tank first so a bit of weight is always on the back springs. Thats at least another 80 kilos on the springs.

Cheers

I Dream every day of having a sub /rear tank mate
i read once 2 tanks on utes and troppys is std and if u bail the sub tank you get some $400 off purchase price of the vehicle
huslty that shackle is a snake racing one came with the 79 maybe ill try some std shackles to when you say clamps little loose do you mean the flat bar bent to a U shape with bolt on the top ?can you crush them back tight?

The rear tank in a 75/79 series is the same as a 70/73/74 series. Then you need the fuel switch solenoids from a dual tank model or Bosch make an aftermarket type.
Shouldnt be too hard to fit

a shorter shackle will make it worse. Only way to get better shackle angle is longer shackle (which you have) longer springs or relocate the mount. But its not that bad the way it is, at least it isnt dead set vertical.

I would just take the overload leaf out, its not going to make it ride better but at least you wont have to worry about axle wrap or sagging- it will give you more clearance though. And as i said before its not as if you have the 15 or 16 springs in there or so that i have seen before.

Yeah you can crush the spring clips back tight i whacked mine with a BFH while i had the springs on the floor, its a bit harder to do with them still on the truck

thanks fellas gib ive seen the packs in some utes were the bottom spring plate might as well be on the ground some blokes really like there heavy dute spings. My old mans 75 ute tows a 2.5 t drill rig around and only has around 9ish leafs i think... and the dont look to stressed. so the removing of the train track leaf sounds good for a start, hopefully i get some time this weekend to have a crack and some photots at the springs
Rosco when a mates 75 with sub tank had the tray off i thought i remembered brain noteing that the rear subtank holding bar was different to the spare tyre holding bar and i know the spare tyre bar is welded in but it does have spare plugs in the rear bit of the loom were a tank would go in the 79s ,the sub gauge is in the top left or no sub has a oil presh gauge, then if i get a wrecked diesel dash with gauge way more common in aus than a pety to find the diesel, the diesel speedos go to 180kmph (not hdj7x and vdj) and tacho to 6 g were as mine shows 200kmph and tacho end at 7g unless i could just change just the fuel gauge and oil presh side to a twin fuel gauge some how if the sender is not dif to diesel and pet. i first better see if i can put a tank in
Maybe someone has some rear chassis pics with with out?anyone got any?maybe i post, first to see if i can put a tank in
(HZJ79 no sub bottom FZJ79 with sub looking more im thinking that side would be held in by little back screws)

Other way around with the shackles, a longer shackle cause the shackle to stand up straighter. A shorter shackle will lay over more with more angle. Try removing those big leafs and see how it goes.

I see what you mean.
This pic shows a 93 HZJ75 (ex Gin Gin bush fire brigade) without the rear tank.
The other 2 are of a HDJ79
It still doesnt look too hard to cut the offending piece off and weld the new bar in that supports the tank.
Lots of old 75 series chassis at the wreckers these days

For the gauge you could use the old 75 series pod or put another fascia in the dash with the extra gauge.
Im no good at electrics but I think a good auto electrician could wire in the tank switches and get the gauge working.

Another option would be to replace your existing tank with a Longranger. I think you can get a 140 litre tank in the old spot.
You wouldnt have to worry about the electrics or fuel lines with this option.

Good pics mate it wouldnt be to hard to remove the tyre holder id have to do a bit more research or have a look at the fuel line and switch
check the under body vids of the leafs on the troopy compared to ute

LOL the rears on that 79 are like my 75 almost:D

Im getting new Dobinsons fitted to the front for $500 all up friday:grinpimp:
and replacing the horrible old yellow Monroes on the rear with Dobinsons heavy duty shocks

I wonder if the local 76 series gets those side facing rear seats?

I called past toyota today for a drool and took some pics (put them up later) of the trayless vdj79s they have about 4 fuel lines running down each side of the chassis to under the cab:confused:
Nice looking subtank mate rubbing it in...:) were does your spare live?, i like the idea of putting it above the sub under the tray like the genuine toyota tray but the gen toy trays dont look to heavyduty
How cool are those rear troop seats in the 76 best idea, i have about 5 rear troopy seats collecting dust i wonder if they would fit in my brother 73.
Are your front springs sagged out mate or just looking for a different ride bring on friday ay are you going to do the before and after shots;)

Those fuel lines are probably vent lines and return lines. The 7* series diesels does not fill one tank to another,it uses 2 fuel systems so you have a lot of fuel lines.
I think the petrol models fill one to another,at least on the 80 series.

My spare is bolted to the frame behind the cab with a $20 hook bolt or when I have the camper on ,they sit up top just below cab height.
I could possibly fit one under the tray but I would have to remove the cross brace on the tray frame.

Front springs have been shifting and clunking when I turn .I fixed them once and decided to go with new ones this time.
They've also lost some of their ride quality lately.
I dont think it will be too much higher as they still have some lift in the old ones.
I should take a pic to be certain, but Ill definately measure them.

vdj79 pics

for the tank i would need to weld little lugs to shockie bar and a new rear there should be no reason why i couldnt use u square tube or something
you can see the fuel line head off in both directions and other side of the chassis and the sender for the fuel gauge plugs in to the rear end and std cruiser 79 rear springs while i was there

i wonder in the second pic if the front tank actually pushes/pumps fuel backwards to the little switch/solinoid things then lines from both tanks swaps side and run up the front
i havent seen this set up of solinoids on the earlia utes does your 75 have these rocso

God knows. Its real octupus in there. I cant see them being radically different to a 75 though.
I should have taken a pic when I had my tray off.

If yours is petrol it may well have the other system that fills the main tank from the rear tank like the 80 series

Yea mate shes the 4.5 pety if the duel petrol 78 and 79 tank setup runs like the petrol 80's it would be easier to connect up to work, just so hard to find one to go look at and take pics it took me 7 months to find a petrol 79 series half the fzj79 of the few advertised have engine bay shots have the 1hz aka missprints
