I want to replace the POS after market radio with a OEM radio. I am more interested in deterring theft than sound quality (too many car break-ins when younger).

I am wondering what models/years to look for on eBay/Salvage yards. I want plug-in.

I have found some from searching on Mud ('94 Camry/Runner). I'll consider single and double DIN. What are some others.

Thanks.

Hey Ross

Shoot me an email: speicher@san.rr.com

I got a MINT one out of my 93 (same as your 94) that i am going to be pulling soon for an alpine to run my iPod

thanks

I think you'll find salvage yard prices on stock radios to be more than a good aftermarket. However, eBay can sometimes come up with some deals.

i have a Mazda unit in mine. Took a little modification and two wiring harness kits but now i have a three in one with a 6 disc in dash changer

The previous owner of my rig replaced the factory head unit with a BRAND new one less then a year ago, i am pretty stoked! I dont know what possesed him to spend that much $ though! :D

Dang Gumby, I just looked at some prices, YIKES! $200-300 for one with a CD player. I am pretty sure I don't want one that bad, that would put too big a dent in the money earmarked for a lift.

emailed you BM.

Interested in this info as well. I want to change over to a single-din, but don't want to lose the OEM look. Don't care about a casette player, but I definately want a CD player, and preferably one that doesn't skip :o

I don't know of a Toyota single DIN setup, but I do know that my old Tacoma (1998 Limited) had one of the best CD players as far as skipping was concerned. That truck had a very stiff suspension and played my scratched up burned CDs with ease. Double DIN, single disk player.

Does the OEM radio from a '97 use the same wiring harness as a '94. The major difference I would think would be that of the antenna. IIRC '94 antenna only operates from the manual buttons, whereas a '97 also responds to the radio.

I'm currently running a single din Toyota CD player in my cruiser from a 98 Camry. It has the same face as the deck in my 99 Tacoma, however it's a non amped version which means it is for the external amp systems that I think most of the FZJ's have. It plugged right in, powers all 9 speakers, and I'm also able to run my iPod off of the external CD changer controls by using a box from USASpec that plugs into the external cd changer port and makes the iPod work like CD changer.

Unfortunatly I forgot to write down the model number before I put it in the truck. I've very happy with it... well except for the strange static I get occasionlly from the right rear door speaker. Not sure what's going on there. I'm thinking a bad capacitor or ground somewhere. It only happens when going over bumps and such so it's hard to track down.

Oh yeah forgot to mention, in 98 Toyota went to a new (at the time) CD changer plug. It's these later plugs that the fun iPod and changer toys come out for. Also in 2002? Toyota changed the head unit plug to a different configuration.

I'm sure CDan can clarify most of this.

This would be an ideal solution for me. I mostly use my iPod or radio anyway, so single DIN would be fine. It looks like it would need to be '98 or younger for the USA spec adaptor.

Thanks for the info

I am looking for something like this too for my 97 LX450. I want an auxiliary audio input to plug a DVD player. The stock (2 din) headunit does not allow this and I cannot find an adaptor for my 97 model....there are several available for 98 and onwards. FYI...both the headunit and the six CD changer are Pioneer made for Toyota and there are 6 speakers (plus a subwoofer) driven by an external amplifier.

Darwood, could you please find the model number that you installed to replace the stock radio and still maintained the use of the external amplifier and the CD changer through an adaptor?

Has anybody else made a mod to the 97 headunit to get an aux input? How?

Thanks.

Don't know about you, but I've got 9 speakers:

2 in the front doors
2 in the front dash
2 in the rear doors
2 in the rear headliner
1 subwoofer in the rear

I have 2 speakers in the rear doors, 2 in the front doors, 2 in the front dash (actually, under the dash) and one subwoofer in the center console. Was your original headunit built by Pioneer or Nakamichi?

Oh you have the LX450. Yeah they don't have the headliner speakers for some reason. I don't recall who made my original head unit. I didn't have it long and it never worked. I'll have to check who makes the current deck I have as well.

In searching, I found these in area junk yards, 1 from a '98 Camry, the other from a '98 Avalon:

recvr, 1 DIN mtd, w/cassette, w/o acoustic flavor; Fujitsu Ten; 6 spkr (also used for remote Cd control)

I have no idea what 'acoustic flavor' is, but does this sound somewhat familar Darwood? I may just pop over and get it as it is only about $100 and see what happens. Thanks Darwood.

That sounds like the cassette version of the deck I have. It's similar to the CD version just that it well plays cassettes instead of CD's.

I found the part number: Toyota 86120-08040

And I remember it being a Fujitsu Ten.

Forgot to mention that I have no idea what 'acoustic flavor' is. I don't have anything like that on my deck.
