I just purchased a Garmin 340 for my FJ and am looking for ideas where to mount it. Any suggestions? I'm thinking about either on the dash (center) or in the cup holder beside the t-case lever.

I have the pop up compartment, but don't like the nav system directly in front of me. Anyone else mount one in their FJ?

I have a Garman Vista C and plan to mount it next to or above the accessory meters. I've found it to be the best location in almost every vehicle I've had it in, you don't have to take your eyes off the road to see it and its not always in your direct line of sight...

another few things to think of are:
- The antenna needs to have line of sight to the sky, if you put it low or inbound to much you get poor reception.
- keep the controls with in reach so you can make changes on the go.
- Have it mounted so if you have a passanger 'Navigater' they could also use it.

hope this gives you some ideas

I have a Lowrance 500C with 5 inch screen mounted dead center front windshield. I did not get the accessory meters solely to keep this part of the dash open for the GPS. This is easy to reach, and easy to not only see the maps, but also read directions if needed...all without taking eyes off the road. I experimented with the far forward cup holder but did not like having to look down.

The accessory meters are cool, and I did want them, but for my purposes, the GPS placement and ease of use was more important. I would like a manual compass though as back up.

What about using a "bean bag" mount and positioning it just to the passenger side of the accessory meters. When you have a passenger they could easily do the navigation and when solo it should be easily accessible.

I have a new Sirf-III unit that picks up EXTREMELY well in the glove box. It also has the capability to add an external antenna (~$15) It is a BT receiver and requires a PC or PDA to complete the Nav package. (Holux GPSlim 236)

Mustang,
How are you running the power cords on that unit? I have the same unit.

Hi JLam
Where the suction cup mounts to the panel I had to first use some clear 3M plastic headlight cover so the cup would stay attached. The electrical feed drops down and slips into the gap just above the steering column. From there it goes to the cigarette lighter which has a splitter so I can plug in my celphone as well.

I cannot find any clips for the cruisers. What clips are you using. I want to mount my tc4200 tablet and use it as my GPS. :confused:At least I will be able to see it.

Thanks

I tried a lot of stuff then finally settled for the suction cup mount of the left side. Easy to wire for power and ext mic there.

With the Garmin, it does the auto turn on and auto turn off after 30 seconds when you wire it to switched power. That is very nice and convenient.

Noisy,
In the 2nd picture above, it appears you are either wiring direct or using fusible links. Do you use some type of fuse with those connections?

I am amazed at how many unused connections Toyota provided in the fuse panel. That makes adding accessories much easier.

I thought I had seen some other members posting how they dumped the factory radio and installed a Radio / GPS unit in the same spot. However I am not finding it in searches. Anyone? I'll keep looking.
