Where to Get Accurate CEL Codes

My wife's 2005 4Runner got it's first CEL this week. It's been a long time since I've had to do anything about that - I drive an FJ60. Are there any places that can pull reliable codes that I can do my own research on? Autozone, Advanced Auto, etc? Would the Toyota dealership pull codes for free? I'm trying to make this a DIY kind of thing, so I don't really want to spend $100-200 for Toyota to do a full diagnostic.

Any help is appreciated.
