Where to buy the "GUTS" of an LX key?

My '01 LX came with only one key. I've got 2 shells/blades being cut right now and I'd like to have a fully functional spare. Where is the best place to buy the electronic portion of the key?

Other than the dealer maybe you could get a used one off Ebay.

Is there some dealer-only programming required to mate the new/used key transponder to the truck?

No, there's a song and dance you can do that programs the fob buttons. But generally it's the shell that breaks and people transfer their old guts to a new shell, so not a lot of used guts out there.

I just recently purchased a 2004 LC with only one master key. I decided to buy an OEM key (with entry) on eBay from keys_star for $69. Toyota logo and everything. Looks identical to the key I had and about $150 less than Toyota retail pricing. Had a buddy at Toyota cut it and program for free. It takes them a few clicks of the computer but I also reprogrammed my original key (after lock actuator replacement) with the "song and dance" method Trunk mentioned. The keys both work the same. Not sure if the LX stuff is the same.

Good to know. I've been swapping the original guts from two fob keys into new shells for years but there's always a chance that one of the guts modules will fail one day.
