Hi,

where do I find it? is it the one hanging on the driver side? if so, I can't any 4 or 7 pin that fits.

If you look through the forums there is a thread that has the FSMs for a 2004 which should match your truck. It should give you a good idea of where to look for the harness. You will have to find the empty end of it and get a 4-way or 7-way conversion kit for it.

Mine is to the left of the hitch tucked up under the bumper. There's a 7 way round to a 4-way flat adapter that I use.
left of the bumper you mean driver side?

tbh I looked and did not find that thread.

do you mind sharing the link?

Here is under my truck and I cannot find any plug that is not connected other than the one on driver side.

first pic driver side, the rest are passanger side

The brake controller on my 98 was just below DS rear turn signal. It was bad so i replaced it and ran new wires from it down to the hitch are for mounting.

That's it in the first pic.

thanks man. Do you know which adapter works? I bought one from amazon that plugs to this and then makes 7 and 4 pin but does not fit in the socket in the first pic.

Which amazon adapter?

You have to get the Toyota plug to attach to that plug in pic 1. What I did: DIY from that plug to bumper mount.

Convert OEM to 4 pin flat

4 pin to 4 & 7 pin adapter

You'll need to run a fused +12V wire to power and tap a reverse light wire to get that functionality in the 7 pin socket. If nothing you tow or plan to tow has electric trailer brakes, ignore that wire.

nothing with electric brake. Just a jet ski with its small trailer.

So now, I read that I need to have the expensive Toyota harness 82177-60010. Do I need it or Convert OEM to 4 pin flat this will do the trick?

Mine has the stock 4-pin flat and that is the 4&7-pin that I purchased. Still gotta install and run wires. Will use a Curt Wireless 7-pin adapter so no need for a brake controller wire to run for me!

I believe, pretty firmly, that the OEM to 4 pin part is all you'll need. You may elect for a mounting bracket for the 4 pin adapter on the truck side.

To be extra sure, identify each pin in the OEM harness with a multi-meter. Set your multimeter to 20V DC range. Turn on your lights and ensure one of the pins goes up to ~12V. The left and right turn signal pins should bounce anywhere between 0-12V. The last pin should go to ~12V when you apply the brakes.

BTW my truck had the OEM to 4 pin part already, but the internals of the 4 pin connector were so corroded that I selected to directly crimp the wires and bypass the 4 pin to 4 pin connection between the two adapters. To hell with dropping the spare and fiddling with corroded connectors on the curb, especially when towing ... much less giving law enforcement a reason to pull me over due to a trailer lighting issue.

Are you referring to the Curt BT brake controller? That is what I have. Seems to work well and is brainless to set up and operate 👍

My posts above are meant for rigs that came with stock wiring and connectors for 4 pin plugs. This may not hold for every truck across the production years.

Correct. IIRC, Mr. T. changed the tow wiring set up from 2003 on to have the brake controller plug under the dash and the 7 pin connector plug at the rear bumper.
