McMaster..... they have them as long as 6' long.. and several thickness

Are you sure you want to go that route?
I have some left over piano hinge I ordered for my trailer. I had planned on welding it up, making a permanment hinge. After staring at it for a while, I went a differnent route. Home Depot has a three pack of 4" door hinges for $12 or so. I went with those using 1/4 -20 bolts to mount it, because the pins are removable, so is the lid, no alignment/lubrication issues like alot of tool boxes i have.
Works like a champ so far!!!

I also went with the gate hinge idea. Bought mine at Lowe's. I was worried about junk getting into the piano type hinges. As mentioned it is really easy to unbolt and take off if needed.

thanks fellas, I am rethinking. I currently have 2 large hinges on each side of my lid which opens from the middle of my CDN M101 trailer. so I have 2-3' long by 4' wide lids that open from the center up towards the center. I am now going to cut each 3' section in half and add 2 large hinges there as well giving me a total of 4 sections at 1.5' long by 4' wide. So I will open 1.5' at a time towards the center and therefore have solved my problem of having to raise my RTT rack delimma so high which needed to be 3' higher than top of lid. now my rack system can be as low as 1.5' from top of lid. If at that makes sense? Check my other thread which has pics of my lid setup. So I can now travel down the road with rack much lower than what I had originally setup. Thanks, I found at lowes good size stainless hinges that I will mount. Will post pics this weekend.

Thanks

That makes sense, are you doing anything to keep the lid water tight, or is it not a concern?

Yes, I am going to put some kind of seal under lid right on top of top edge of trailer. Over the hinges and I will have a UV rated rubber strip glued down so no water will get through crack, so that strip will be approx 8" wide totally covering crack where hinges are, if you can picture? Thats my first thought.

I am going with identical hinges like I already have in the center, al hinges will be external. I am going to glue down a piece of rubber stripping approx lets say 6" wide all the way down the crack so water cannot penetrate. it would only be able to get in if sprayed direcly from the side under the rubber strip which is never going to happen? besides the wood will be water sealed as well. I actually bought that thick rubber mat that you put under a shower pan in a shower, and will use that, its extrememly tough. I am also going to put a seal inbetween the cracks so when they fold against each other it will create a seal? I will post picks.

Thanks
