I would like to get a tranny cooler. How difficult is it to install these things. Can a reputable mechanic do it? Should I bring it to a Toyota mechanic?

How about a transmission specialist like ammco?

Above all...where can I order one online?

Thanks.

Droopy

but can you recommend one for me...are they all universal?

I think they are pretty much universal. You want a cross-flow design (like a rad) rather than the "S-tube" type. Surface area is more important than depth (i.e. thin and wide is good). I think I would go for one of these: B&M 70266 - B&M SuperCooler Oil Coolers - summitracing.com or B&M 70274 - B&M SuperCooler Oil Coolers - summitracing.com
Putting one in is on my to do list, but I live in a cool area, so it'd be more for possible towing than regular duty.

*EDIT* This is the one shown in the FAQ thread.

Check out Hayden: pretty much universal & a 1-banana job (U can do it). I put mine in series with the one in my radiator (instructions are pretty clear).

Try your local Napa part store. They have different universal transmission coolers. I got a small one there for my power steering system.

thanks fellas...

I'd like your opinions...I'm basically going to drive this thing around for fun...I don't plan on using it for pulling, towing, winching, etc. However, I do have a lot of hills and inclines in my neck of the woods. Plus it does get pretty hot in the summer.

Do you think I really need a transmission oil cooler?

If you find yourself dropping down into third much on hill climbs.....YES.

The torque convertor generates lots of heat when not locked up (lock-up above ~50 in OD in stock form, above ~50 in OD and 3rd with some extra goodies ;)), and heat is what kills the fluid and ultimately the tranny. The ATF light doesn't come on till 300*F, and out at 250*F, at these temps, you are already doing nasty things (see here). You could rig a temp sensor to tell you what your ATF is running (my cheap one here), and use this as a judge, but a cooler is pretty cheap compared to dealing with a blown tranny.

My $0.04

I just picked up a NAPA/Hayden #7509 cooler. Same dimensions at the B&M #70268. Should get it in sometime in the next week and a half.

What are the cheapest ones? ( junkyard free, up to $75 summit racing). Anything in between in So Cal area? Just askin because I'm bein lazy rather than calling around and finding one.

Call Napa and use RockDoc part number. Don't bother with a used one.

NorcalFJ60 is right, buy a new one. I just installed a new one. Cost me $50. The hardest part of the install was finding the right fittings to match the radiator and trany hoses. It's pretty straight forward. pm me and I can provide pics. I'll do a writeup later.

Hope it is not too late. Go with the B &M cooler. Do what the link says: https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/76962-fj62-transmission-oil-cooler-install.html

I did it and it works sweet. Buy a used transmission line from Spectre Off Road or someplace else and use the hose ends to install the cooler inline. Remember, the input into the cooler is at the bottom of the cooler. The tranny pump pumps the hot fluid from the bottom of the cooler up to the top and then out back into circulation to the tranny.

Noob question here but... are you guys adding the aftermarket cooler to run in series or parallel with the existing stock radiator transmission cooler or capping off the radiator ports and using the aftermarket cooler in place of the stock?

Thanks,

The 62 doesn't have a stock cooler, that is the problem everything has to be aftermarket

Thanks,

In series, down stream as the ATF flows.

Well, actually it does. It's in the bottom of the radiator.

I installed mine in-line after the radiator, and it made a huge difference in the tranny fluid temps. I used a small thermocouple with my DVM to take some before and after readings, and it made a big difference. I used a B&M plate style cooler, mounted in front of the AC condensor coil.

I ended up getting a B&M cooler for my transmission. I mounted it and hooked it up. I guess it works, but I'm leaking fluid at the fittings. I tried a little teflon tape to seal it but it still leaks. I'm using the brass fittings that came with the cooler.

It sure gets hot down there...I would like to get that fancy blue, high pressure hose and fittings like the ones another guy on here used.

I guess I'll shop around.
