Question about Timing belt and water pump. I have read about alot of dicussion here, what I would like to know is this a difficult job to replace? what amount of time should I expect for a first crack, and yes I have wrenched on alot of vehicles though not my trade. I have 158k on rig this is the oem belt.I called local parts house that have belt&pump o.k. to use? or should I go to Dealer for parts.

Get the OEM parts from CruiserDan. Send him a PM; he's got great pricing and free shipping for MUD members.

What can one expect for economy gains by adding LPG? Is anyone in the US doing it? Just wondering.

What is LPG? Please

Josh, that is a big mistake to make. I am very glad you rectified your statement.

Port, Did you get the Belt/pump done yet?

also, If you are interested, PM me and i will give you a list of all the stuff you will want to buy. A Shopping list if you will. Save Crusier Dan on shipping, he sells it cheaper than my buddy at Lexus get't it with his discount. I just did most of this stuff within the last year. I did some myself, but the timing belt, I figured it would be more cost effective to find a mechanic to do it on the cheap. I can't afford to not have to the car for work.

Love the variety of replies on this one.

.02:

Change per mfg recommendations, every 90k. Absence of records and sticker probably means belt was not changed at 90k. (For a job like the timing belt, and given the importance of it, I'd say very few are done without the sticker lovingly applied. I applied mine with relish, and even cleaned it, when I finished.)

(Folks who say you can let it go past 90k, go ahead. Let us know how that goes for you.)

And no, you cannot trust a visual inspection to tell you when it is near failure.

As for interference or non-interference: I wouldn't bet the cost of a 100 Series engine on that one. Even if Toyota says it is non-interference - how much did they test that? Did they try breaking a timing belt at 3000 rpm? If a camshaft stops dead while the crank is spinning fast, will a piston hit a valve or not? Pretty good chance of it for any engine, I'd say...and even if it didn't, it causes a huge inconvenience or worse, towing bill, and a mess to clean up - plus unplanned vehicle downtime.

Bite the bullet.

What is strange is that dealers do tell you that it it non-interference, but the service manual tells you to put the crank at 50 degrees prior to removing the belt off the cams - a-ha, interference.
I would not go past 120K - only because that is where I am at. Be on the safe side, change that thing around 100K if possible.
PM me if you have any questions, I am no expert, but I changed mine and know the issues around doing so.

Here's one more source to add to the interference/non-interference controversy - Gates Rubber, a timing belt manufacturer, says the UZ-2FE engine is an interference design: http://www.gates.com/part_locator/index.cfm?location_id=3598
