What could it be? Everytime I press the brake pedal my left blinker light comes on (the dashboard light). It doesn't blink, it just stays on until I take my foot off the brake pedal. I have checked all my light bulbs and they are good. What could it be? Please help! I have a 1996 Land Cruiser.

Has there been any electrical work done to the car? If so make sure they were put back correctly. Also check all the fuses and all the bulbs even inside the car. If all is good then I really cant tell you what is wrong. This is a rare situation

do you have anythign hooked to your trailer harness? inspect the trailer harness and see if it is chafeing anywhere.

does the left turn signal make the brake light come on?

There is nothing hooked up to the trailer harness. Here is what happens: everything works fine when my foot is not on the brake pedal. The blinkers work fine and so do the brake lights. As soon as I press the brake pedal all the brake lights (as they should), light up and so does the left turn signal (as it shouldn't). As long as I am not pressing the brake pedal everything works fine, but as soon as the brake pedal is pressed.... the left turn signal comes on and stays on as long as I am pressing the brake pedal.

Sounds like what happened to me recently...

While warming up the truck one night with the lights off I noticed that the dashboard lights went on when I pressed the brake pedal. Thought it was strange and made a mental note to post here about it but forgot.

Two weeks later my wife calls me and says that the blinker light was stuck on as she drove.

Next day she says it won't get out of park - it is stuck.

Investigation: both brake and turn signal fuses blown. (Brake fuse will lock it in park btw) Hmm, replace the fuses and pull the truck into the garage - before I get there, the brake light fuse blows again. Think about it for a minute, slide myself under the back of the truck and disconnect the trailer wiring kit. Reconnect the plugs how they came from the factory. That was it - everything worked just fine after that. Problem was the wiring kit had gone bad after 1.5 years.

OK. Since I've checked my fuses (and they are good), I need to check out my wiring harness. I will do that first thing tomorrow. If that doesn't work, does anyone have any other suggestions or had it happen to them too?? Thanks, Sean!

trailer harness. prolly a bad converter.

on my LX the factory (or port installed?) trailer light controller/converter is in the right side just foreward of the RH tail light, you access it by removing the large interior pannel. there is also a wire that crosses under the carpet I assume to pick up the LH blinker signal, the harness comes out of the controller and down and exits through a gromet to the underside. dont know if it is the same for the LC or other years.

do you have the EWD?

another version of the harness plugs in under/behind the rear bumper.

Thanks to all that responded, especially Sean! I went out (in the cold) and unplugged my trailer harness and plugged the factory harness back in and everything is WORKING FINE, now! Thanks, again! ;) I love this board!

This thread is very old, and glad I found it. I have this problem with my 2000 Land Cruiser. I depress the brake, and the right signal lights up on the dash. Brake lights and signals work as they should, and the dash right signal comes on when I hit the brake as it should NOT. Also, when i turn my left signal on, my 4 ways come on. My problem started after I drove through a huge puddle going 40mph. I am glad i read this thread, I'm encouraged to check fuses. My harness in the rear is never used for towing trailers though, but I'll look a little closer at that. Thanks.

We were just having a similar discussion a couple weeks ago. Those trailer converters short and cause all matter of strangeness.
