When did the DVD come into play?

I currently own a 2003 LC100 and am being offered the chance to upgrade to a 2004. I have a 7 seater, the 2004 is a 5-seater. We don't need a 7-seater, so OK there. The 2004 has the rear view camera and a tow hitch. It has 120K (km), our 2003 has 85K, but on these cars I see that difference as negligible. It also has the fridge in the armrest.

It does not have the sunroof, which I see as a bonus because we never use it anyway, and I like the storage you get without the sunroof.

THE QUESTION: when did the DVD-player get implemented? I know it was 2004 onwards, but it does not look like it is in the 2004 one I am being offered. Is there any way to tell? The seller is not knowledgeable at all and the car is not local, so I would like to know this beforehand or have it checked by him.

There is NOT a DVD logo on the faceplate next to the nav screen/cassette deck. And yes, it still has the cassette deck. I thought the rear camera came into existence the same time as the DVD unit, which is why I am asking.

If you are referring to the DVD changer in the center console, my '02 has it. If you are referring to the DVD with the fold down screen for the rear passengers, it had to be later, but I am not sure as to when it became an option. For clarification, which one are you referring to?

I have a 6CD-changer in my center console, too. CD only, DVD's are not recognised. I highly doubt you have an OEM DVD-changer in the center console that will play DVD. This was not an OEM option yet in 2002, or so I understand.

I know that a DVD changer came sometime in 2003-2004, around the same time as the rearview camera for parking. This was pretty much standard, if you had a changer, you could play DVD while standing still. This system allows you to play DVD movies when in P and with e-brake engaged.

My question is how do I know if the car I am looking at: the 2004 with rearview camera has a DVD player? I do not have access to the car. There is not a "DVD" logo on the changer, just a "Compact Disc" logo, just like on my 2003.

Actually, I do have the OEM CD/DVD player in my center console. I have played movies in it and it is definitely OEM, as I have had it in to the dealer for a quote on the replacement, since mine skips all disks at this time.

Mine has the DVD logo on the unit; I was quite surprised to find that it did... if yours does not, I would say that it does not have the DVD read capability.

Where are you buying this LC? It doesn't sound like a US spec LC. In the US I believe the rear cam and DVD player are part of the same options package. It's rare to see one without the other. I've also not heard of an 04 US spec cruiser to have no 3rd row or sunroof. The 2003 and 2004 are almost identical vehicles you wouldn't gain much moving to an 04, except for the introduction of the rear cam.

i have 6 disc changer in the center console and it plays DVDs on my nav screen.


on to the question. I wouldnt trade up to a 2004 that has less options and more miles than what you currently have. doesnt make sense

Bingo! Not US spec as I am not in the US. I am going under the same assumption: I was thinking that if you have rear cam, then you must have DVD changer/capability. My 2003 also has the Nav unit, thus it has the CD-changer. I thought that in 2003, the DVD did not exist yet. It came in 2004. So, the car in question MUST have DVD capability because it has the Nav unit. But I want to be sure.

Just to be clear, I am not trading up exactly, but it will not cost me a dime either, that's the deal. I don't need a 7 seater, the other guy does. The tradeoff is more miles on the clock, but a year "younger" car. I realise this means no difference at all in terms of added perks on the car. It does have a tow hitch and a rear cam, which I like. It does not have a moon/sunroof, which I do not use anyway. It does not have rear seating, which I also do not use. If it has DVD, which I do not have, then I will pull the trigger.

BTW, part of the deal is that I get to keep my own wheels/tires, both summmer and winter set. If the service history is good, I will do the deal. No cash trades hands and I get a car which has slightly "better" specs for my tastes.

Thanks for the input so far. I'll check Slee's document. I forgot about that, but I fgured it did not cover all these minute details. Slee is general not about DVD or electric comforts.

One thing that I would like to politely point out: If the DVD designation does not appear on the unit, it does not read DVDs. This is regardless of its age.

Sorry for assuming you where in the US, it's a big world out there.

I have an 04 with the drop down factory DVD player for the 2nd row. It's a nice feature but it does have it's drawbacks. First it's a very small low res screen, it's 2004 LCD technology which is dated. Second, you change the DVD's from the trunk area not the center console. DVD players are great on road trips, but if you have luggage in the SUV it all has to come out in order to change the DVD.

As a note, most 03 LC's here in the States did come with the 2nd row DVD player, 04 just introduced the backup cam.

You can always get a portable Sony unit. They are big, super cheap and have great quality screens. The downside with them is you have to put them away when not in use so it's not stolen.

Edit: Not sure if you where referring to a 2nd row drop down DVD player or if you where looking for the ability to play DVD's on your Nav Console. Most US spec LC's don't let you play DVD from the Center Console.

Between his 'wants' and yours, cam, tow hitch, dvd, fridge and no sunroof. IMO, the difference in mileage isn't a big deal, unless his LC has a history of problems.

I wish I didn't have a sunroof and would much rather have the option to install a ceiling console for storage space.

Thanks, guys. This pretty much answers my question: it does NOT have DVD playback capability then. Which is a huge disappointment.

In my 2003, I had a 6DVD changer added to the center console next to the CD-changer. Fits perfect and there is room left over for other stuff. I can watch movies (while driving) on the nav unit at the flick of a switch (DVD overrides the Nav screen only, not audio or other screen functions), and the DVD-signal also goes to the screens in the headrests. I don't watch movies while driving, it's just that my kids are small and we need to operate the DVD for them. Remote Control goes in the sunglasses cubby and remote sensor is also there.

As the car I am looking at has the fridge in the center console, the DVD-changer could not be installed there. I ran a previous thread on this a year or two ago, and the question is where we could install the DVD_changer then.....
