When did the DVD come into play?

Yep, parking brake MUST be engaged for the DVD to actually play video.

Yes, but the DVD player under my front passenger seat is for the OEM navigation system.

HELP ... I am unclear here. I recently purchased a 03 TLC. The nav system does not function..."cannot read the disk." Everything else works fine...radio, cd player, heat and cooling systems etc. I purchased a nav disk set on ebay which the DVD player still cannot read. The player takes in and ejects disks fine but cannot read it. The new disk has North American East and West (2) disks. With so many excellent "phone based" nav systems do I really need this "original" system? Does this dvd player do anything else that is critical to the operation of this vehicle?

Are you positive that you have the correct Navigation DVD for the 'generation' nav system that you have?

In my experience with Toyota/Lexus navigation systems (2003 GX470/2004 T4R/2006 LX470) "cannot read the disk" indicates that the DVD drive is no longer working, not that the disk has somehow gone bad.

This could probably be fixed with something like this:

(although it might be best to verify that it matches the part number of the part in your vehicle)

I very rarely use the OEM navigation in my LX, as I prefer "Waze" on my GROM VLine. Although it can be kind of useful if you're in a poor cell coverage area.

If the dvd driver is only operating a navigation system I can live without it. Agreed that WAZE works just dandy. However, it would be nice to have things like bluetooth, hands free phone service etc.
