Hi, I just joined up and am posting my first thread. I just drove my '96 FZJ-80 from Seattle to D.C. and by the time I got here and washed everything off I found that the wheels were covered in rusty-looking spots of corrosion, I'm guessing from the salt they put on the roads on the East Coast. So my question is; how do I get rid of the corrosion? Can I do it easily myself or do I need to hire a pro?

Thanks!

You could try Simi Chrome polish if you can find it (they sell at a hardware store up this way) or just get them powered coated black :D joking welcome to MUD

Welcome to the other Washington!

When it snows here the local jurisdictions love to use as much salt as possible on the roads. If you drive it when it snows around here you are going to have rust on the truck, somewhere, period. I like to get the salt off with either a car wash or quick hose down with plain water. Make sure you get under the truck also.

I invested in a power washer. It came in real handy removing the gobs of mud accumulated while searching for my dog. I bought it to remove salt.

Power washers are amazing. for one they waste a fraction of what you usually consume with a traditional hose and it washes better. you just need to be careful to not get too close since it can damage things. It pays for itself quickly and you can use it for everything.

If you have Alum alloy wheels, i think there is a special polish. same goes with chrome. if it is just paint, clean and wax as you would with regular paint.

The salt can stay on the roads for months at a time. I have seen mounds of salt 12 inches high on the side of the road after a snowfall.

welcome
wash frequently
or do what I do and drive a company truck:bounce:

Thanks guys. Sounds like I should invest in a good power washer and find some sort of wheel cleaner. I've got the stock alum alloy wheels. I've heard you can use Simple Green and a wheel brush to get the corrosion off too. It's annoying they salt the roads around here. They don't do that back on the West Coast. Oh well, I'll just have to get used to it. I'll get some pics up soon.
