I'm planning my trailer build and had a question I couldn't answer in the searches. The tow vehicle is a 1996 lx450 so I'm looking for a track width close to that. This is what I came up with. Based on 285/755- 16 and I plan on using 80 stock alloy wheels.

Bed width 48"
Tire section width (past rim) 1.6" x2
frame member width 2" x2
backspacing 4.5" x2
rim/tire clearance 1" x2
total axle width hub face to hub face 66.2"

This should give me a track width of about 76.4 inches which is one inch over vehicle width on each side.

Is one inch clearance between the tire and frame enough? I'm planning on the axle kit from abctrailerparts.

Thanks

IMHO you want a little more. Imagine how much mud you've seen build up on tires, and then double that. In this part of the world I'd go with at least 3" clearance.

Maybe if you drew up your plans? I'm having trouble visualizing tire/frame interface.

I have about 1½" clearance but, I also have not been in any muddy situations.........yet !!
