I just installed my Scangauge II and am entertaining myself by monitoring the engine. My water temp ranges from 190 - 210 degrees on most days. What's the normal range? At what temp do you need to start being concerned?

There are several threads entirely devoted to this subject with much debate. The general consensus is if you are going over 226F, you are in trouble, and with a properly functioning system the highest temps you should see at any time are 210-215f.

according to my 1994 FSM, 203 is the top of the "normal" operating range. as cary notes, this does not mean it is overheating. the stock temperature gauge would not even move for quite a while after that.

Brett,

On my '97 LX450 with a new blue hub fan clutch (stock fluid etc) my temps range from 193-202F on fairly hot (90+F) days with AC on. Idling it'll get to 202F and running down the road at 45ish it typically stays around 195-198F.

These are per my Scangauge II as well.

I've noticed the stock non-modded temp gauge reaches its resting point (just slightly below horizontal) right around 160F and doesn't move until past 215F or so. I can't recall exactly as what temp but on the way home from Moab pulling a trailer up the passes I actually got to see my stock gauge move...IIRC it was in the 215F range when the stock gauge started moving again and per the Scangauge II I got up to a max temp was 225F which is just below the AC cutout temp of 226 IIRC from CDan. The stock gauge needle was only pointing about 2-3 needle widths above horizontal at 225F .

I have a feeling that by the time the stock gauge shows an over temp situation it would almost be too late. It must shoot up like a rocket after 225F :frown:

Crack yourself open the beverage of your choice and read this thread. It has had alot of information added since it's inception almost 2 years ago.

just did a search and found this thread.

Since i rebuilt my alternator, i hooked my roommy's scangauge so i could keep an eye on my charging volts. IN the mean time i was watching my water temp.

Just FYI, i have the original radiator in, blue fan clutch, and Toyota red fluid in. I max out around town at 191 degrees.

I feel pretty good about that. No need for me to worry about new radiators and modifying my fan clutch.
