What's the deal with Trail Gear?

I've read on pirate that the NEW TG pump is top notch.

Also, there is a guy here that has been running the tg hydro assist for a while (2" ram and tg pump). He said its not laggy at all and can't out steer it.

Why bother, when you can buy a "P" pump from a yard for $20 that will out perform. With that said, I read a lot of stuff on Pirate. Not all of is worth reading as most of it is bs. I'm not being a arss. Just saying it like it is. There is a ton of info out there, most of which you have to consider the source from which it came from first.

I don't know the details on the alleged theft here, but hay, in this industry if your stuff is not patented then you are just asking for it.

The problem with patents is that once a patent is on the books other companies can see exactly how your widget works. They make a few small changes and then sell their widget with the minimal changes to avoid infringement.

What the patents do not cover is how you produced the widget (if you don't patent your process that is). If you can produce the superior widget with a process unknown to your competition you will have an edge.

That being said most truck parts do not require a rocket scientist to reverse engineer, patented or not.

Sorry about the hijack. I do like the TG hydro assist but overall I am a big Marlin fan.

Yes, Marlin's CS needs some serious help, we all know this. But I hate theives, and so will put up with not getting parts Johnny on the spot like it was Walmart. We all are dealing with custom 4x4's and parts are sometimes hard to come by, I'll deal with it and keep buying from a guy who always has my best interest at heart.

On the subject of patents. THEY DONT WORK!

By the by, I got my information direct from the source. Not the rumor mill.

I've used all pro, marlin and trail gear. My customer service experience was best with tg. I have also never broke any of my tg parts, dirty 30's, chromo hub gears, hi steer, never had an issue. I'm a die hard toyota fan and it's nice having options when you buy to help keep prices down.

I remember this drunken conversation around the camp fire you and I had not so many years ago, it rang true then and even today its a valid point that cannot be denied. Personally I don't know what truly happened between the two but it sucks to have this anger in our small community.

I valued your opinion then and still do, its its very honorable to support whom you feel is being wronged. You keep to your guns and don't back off.

Back to what we discussed at R.C, if you remember, I said I had almost 5 k in parts in my junk from T.G, I do. I started slow, tested, rambled the designs, plotted bla bla. It all boiled down to this, JUST what I planned to do with the rig, cost, when I needed a part, how fast would I get it when I tore it down to upgrade what I ordered. Well, not only did they give me huge shipping breaks, hell some ass at UPS Depot stole my bumper while it was in route to me and they without question, before they was paid for what they lost shipped me a new one and ate the cost of shipping it air almost directly to my home then.

Well that impressed the hell outta me. Yea, almost forgot, once they shipped me Chinese inner and outer wheel bearings, I raised hell, they told me to keep them for spares and they sent me Timkin bearings and some other goody's, free nevertheless.

I have seen bad from them, but not much. I see Chinese made/grade parts but some of this stuff is beefy as hell!
I busted up one of their transfer mounts the same year at RC in the rock garden, well not busted but wallered out the poly(for the lack of a better term) the center, just enough to cause drive line wobble. I admit my fault. I was in to much in a hurry to toss in the oem mount at least under the marlin box as Jared (our beloved mod) advised me on the phone to do. lol, heck the same transfer mount(under the OEM transfer) is still in the truck. They said even after I admitted I was lazy, they would send me a new one free of charge after I mailed the old one in. Their rubber boots on the TRE's suck, Fluid Film has helped mine, lol I think.

I have called some times and got some rude asshats, I have called and got very pleasant service and last but not least I have called and raised hell when I probably should not have and whomever was very patient. Nothing I have ever bought from them has ever left me stranded, almost the IFS mounting box but again, my fault.

However people Like Marlin, Bobby and many others truly support our community and would give their shirt off their back when in need. Its like wall mart, if you know what you are shopping for and cannot afford to go shopping at Sears , its a necessary evil that some of us don't have the luxury to shop at Sears (so to speak) so, we head up to wall mart and find our needs. That doesn't make that customer a traitor or a bad person furthermore you never made that assumption but others have.

My windy point here is you be correct and I hope up coming venders can learn from this?

Ok, crazy will go away now:flipoff2:
Not for nothing, but if marlin could actually stock and ship his stuff and provide decent customer service, trail gear wouldn't exist. He created a demand in the Toyota 4x4 market by not fulfilling supply, pretty much creating Trail Mart. I am not saying Marlins guys aren't knowledgeable, they are some of the best minds in the 4x4 community, that doesn't mean they can run a business.

I am not advocating Trail Gear, I wont buy their stuff, and I wont even buy from a vendor that sells their stuff, but the simple fact still remains that if someone could call Marlin, place an order, and actually get it within a reasonable amount of time Trail gear wouldn't be nearly as big as they are.

Any and all hostility could have and always would be avoidable if companies didn't steel from others. I and all us know its common in business, never the less it sucks when you take the time to design something, test it out and market it only to have to ripped off by someone with a bigger wallet then you that can "MASS" produce it from a foreign country and sell it for less then you can and still make more money on said item.

I believe to much of that kind of thing can actually be bad for the industry. "IF" parts constantly getting cheaper and cheaper they are destine for failure at some point due to short cuts in production or design.

I believe in quality and honesty above all else. And while everything has a breaking point (nothing is unbreakable) I have heard to many stories from others that just never post anything on any sight, regarding the lack of quality form certain vendors.
And as others have already stated, certain "American" companies will go "WAY" out of their way to make sure that clients that are stranded on trails can have parts delivered to them just so they can off the trail with out further complication.

I remember back when I was in construction as a finish carpenter, having my truck fully loaded for the next moring. It was full of tools, thousands of dollars worth. I could have built an other crawler for the amount I spent on those tools. Walk out of my house one morning only to find the back of the truck wide open and every power tool in the back "GONE"! Why not cut my flippin hand off while you're at it. I only make a living with those tools. How do I pay rent now.

I cant imagine how those companies that have had their stuff ripped off feel. I understand there is a bit of copy cat stuff that goes on, sometimes due to the fact there are limitations to what you can do. But a direct copy is !!%$&#@!!! :censor:Up! We dont need that in this industry.

Come out with your own stuff rather than taking someone else's design, and then no one could talk smack about it. At that point it would totally be based on its performance.

Your whole statement was well worded, and articulated some good points, but this:

Is a pretty awful enounter. That really sucks, and I think it's about as close as any of us can get to understanding how it feels to a small company that's getting a product ripped off by a larger one.

Kinda off topic:hhmm: long and short...

I have been to cruiser meets, Marlin was at one particular meet and spent three days in the same camp.... along with speeaking with and being friends with the likes of Mark at Metal Tech. I could keep throwing out names... but at the end of the day I spend my money with people who I know and like, it hits home hard when I see a small business fail due to corporations and target pricing.

In my small town, I watched Wall Mart crush a number of small companies, some people who I knew personally.

So I do not personally shop at Wall Mart, I save my money and buy with local companies.

People give me the excuse that we are in tough times and need to stretch the dollar, good point but quit buying so much crap and buy what you need......

Thirded.
Support your local businesses.

Intellectual Property Rights are a bitch. Someone didn't have proper employment contracts obviously and another exploited that.

It's easy to hate the cost cutting importers like Trail Gear. I was really hesitant to order from them because of their rep on ih8mud. But I ordered from them, they sucked me in with their Aisin parts being way cheaper. My stuff came within 48 hours, was as described, and the tech support was awesome. You get what you pay for, and they have some budget stuff.

A lot of people import the same stuff, but bulk gets it cheaper.

I have nothing but praise for All-Pro Offroad.

The turtle dudes (I'll be nice because the owner is such an incredible dude), well, umm. I bought two assembled third members w/ ARBs from them. One had a carrier bearing retainer tab so long it was buried into the carrier bearing (wrong tab obviously installed). I got 30 miles out of the diff before the ARB seal housing was clogged with large metal shavings. It took a month and a half to even get the parts to fix it my self, I couldn't even tell you how many voicemails I left trying to get help from them. My standard wheeling partner bought a trans from them, only to send it back the first week. The replacement trans died in a few months and is still sitting in his garage because of the hassle sending it back. I can only buy necessities from them out of good concious.

Can we move this to chat now, or does it stay since it's a mini-specific product and the associated distributor(s) we're discussing?

*FWIW I've never had a problem getting parts or had shipping issues w/ Marlin.
**Problem is I'm here in the S.F. Bay Area, less than a day away, and I am sure to some level friendship's helped out some.

Has it gotten to the point were you inject a little of why you would buy a part from party X, maybe all parts being equal, service etc......

No bashing of individuals or companies:popcorn:. all this said in my calm very relaxed voice;)

Is there so much going on in this section that we should move everything that looks slightly like chat... Sometimes policing a system to heavily can take a little of the enjoyment out of the read...

The one time I've ever ordered something of quantity from them, they shipped it cheap. My schedule was tight then, otherwise I would've just headed down to their shop for pick up.
If I ever get a transmission from them, that's exactly what I'd do, except all the transmission work I've ever had was done at a local shop for within the same price range.

I obviously put OEM parts on my rig when possible... BUT we don't sell heavy duty clutches or hi steer or sliders etc etc etc. I have Marlin and TG parts on my rig. Never had a problem with either. I understand why people buy on principal and if Marlin was in my back yard I would probably buy 100% from them. Bottom line is, this argument will never end. You can hate on whatever company you want for whatever reason you want. People are going to spend their money where they want. Heck, my parts are more expensive than any of the aftermarket guys but I sell A TON of parts to MUD and TLCA members. That being said, OE is usually the best quality so people are willing to pay a little more for piece of mind. It doesn't hurt that I am a supporting vendor and sponsor events when I can. I have wheeled with many people here as well and made many friends. So, buy from who you like, somebody you've wheeled with, whoever you like to BS with on the phone with, or who has the best quality or price or whatever. Your choice.
