I've been searching for a rear e-locker for my 4runner for some time now. While I was searching a came across a used arb locker for the front diff. Comes with compressor, wiring harness, and switch. The gear ratio is the same 4:56 which is the same as mine. This is a 7 1/2 front diff in the 4runner. I know what it cost new but haven't seen any used to compare the price. Guy wants 675 is this a fair price? I figure I would offer 5 and see where it goes from there.

7 1/2 front diff???? Are you kidding me????

No not pulling your leg. I just can't find any used ones to compare prices. And I was never intending on getting a front locker but thought this was a good deal but not completely sure.

FWIW..here is my approach to buying used stuff at a "good/fair" deal, kelly blue book aside...

Deducted from retail price:
NIB -10%
Used but very good condition (low use) -30%
Used good but cosmetic wear and/or moderate use -50%
Used serviceable but <50% life remaining and/or needs repair/PM -70%

Albeit, every used purchase price is very subjective and relative to supply/demand.

Also, I'm a fair deal guy. Not a "haggle a guy down so low that he wouldn't stop to help me with a flat tire in the future" type guy.

If retail on something is 100 bux, and its been used lightly I'm happy to pay 70 bux for it. If a person is asking 70 I'll give it to him. I will not offer him 45 and haggle to 65--life and time is too short for me.

On the flip side, treat people the way you'd like to be treated. I offer thing for sale a fair price and often ignore low ballers. And if you are dealing with a firm, do you not expect a company to make a proffit and stay in business? Thus why so many retailers have had to go internet sales only.

Sorry for the rant..... But, in short, do you need a part or do you need bragging rights as to how low a price you got on the part?

I don't see how I would be bragging about how cheap I got a part if I didn't get said part yet. As my post states I was looking for input because I have never seen a used one to compare it to.

Will, I think you're right on track. A locker is not the easiest part to judge use/abuse. Offer him 5 and see where it goes. Sounds like it is the ring gear as well so install will be slightly easier/quicker.

What does a ABR go for these days? $1000? Gears $200? Install kit and labor? It is tough because you don't know if it was installed correctly but you can check for wear patterns on the gears. Look for receipts if it was installed by a shop.

I wouldn't be suprised if he says no at $500 but you can always try. Its tough to price something where there aren't a lot of used around. You could always just ask him what his bottom line is. Then decide if its worth it to you.

I have been know to tell people to GTFO for low balling me when its really low and refused to sell to them. I was selling a car trailer where the guy asked me my lowest price . I told him ($300 less than my asking price) he said he wanted it and his son drove 2hrs from CT, showed up 2 hrs late so I had to have a neighbor meet him. He offered $200 less than discussed. I told my neighbor to send him packing. He had his dad call me back and say they were going to do the original agreed upon price and I told him I wasn't dealing with him.

Amen!

After two trips to MA in one day I finally got it. First attempt the guys car broke down and he was stranded on the highway. He thought it was his head gasket but turned out to be something else. So we decided to try again over the weekend. So I get off the highway to turn around and head back to CT. When I get off the highway there was a junkyard at the end of the ramp. Needless to say it wasn't a wasted trip. Got a whole bunch of interior trim pieces for the 4runner. So after driving about an hr I pull into my driveway and the guy with the locker calls back. He drives his other car and I turn around and go back to MA. He felt bad for making me take 2 trips and knock the price down to $550. We hook the compressor up to the battery and everything I working. Now I have more parts on my shelf in the garage just need time to put it all together. The locker was definitely used but didn't look worn. Locked and unlocked with no problem. The wiring was not in the greatest shape but I am comfortable fixing that.

Wow crazy story. Glad everything worked out in the end.
