What's a fair price for a '96 HDJ80, if you could get one?

I've just looked at a '96 HDJ80 down here in Guatemala. NO RUST, 150,000kM, VX trim package turbo diesel, 5 speed, A/C front AND rear.
My only complaint would be on the seams of the front seats there is about a 2" tear on both.
How do I tell if it has lockers? There was no contraption that looked like electric lockers but are cable lockers possible? Looked to me like there was too many cables/hoses to the rear axle.
I know NOTHING on '80 series so help me out please.

Hard for us to price them because they are not offered here. If I could find an 80 series LC with a 5 speed and a Turbo Diesel I would probably pay double maybe triple what I paid for my LC, but that is only because it would be the only 80 series turbo diesel in the states.

There's a fellow on here that might be able to assist you . Never spoken to him , but a few guys on here know him pretty good . He goes by the handle VZLAFZJ80 . Shoot him a PM ... maybe he knows .

TY

PS : I just got off the phone with an LC shop in Edmonton , Alberta Canada , and they say the diesel 80's are on their way ... won't be long before a bunch are sitting here in Canada ,, :D

Those are all right hand drive though! This is normal left hand drive. Makes life easier here in North America. I've seen the price on the JDM importers websites and I can pick this one up for less than the prices of the JDM '80's and this one is a VX trim level as well.

A picture of what to look for on lockers would be appreciated.

I would but am not locked, you would know it right off the bat though if it was, has a nob just left of the steering wheel, good place to get a pic might be ebay, thats where I started seeing what model had what?????? Hope this helps.

I would think that the f/r locker switch would be found at the same spot that you would in the N. American version, to the left of the steering wheel.

JDM 80's with lockers have the same switch on the left side of the steering wheel as well, although their steering is on the right hand side.

FWIW, HTH,

Thats it , but try and find one that isn't that iccky grey .. EWWW !! :flipoff2:

tech - turn knob to operate switch :D

There is a push button switch, shows all 4 wheels and drive shafts. Doesn't look like the picture you've posted though. I figured the push button switch was maybe the transfer case lock or some such thing (I'm not real familiar with full time 4wd).

Like the one on the left?

If yes, that's the CDL switch.

Search for Drexx and e-mail him. He has one in the states, but I think he is currnetly in the phillipenes (yep, I can't spell).

Just a note: if you plan on bringing that HDJ to the states, take a look at the government website on importing guidelines. At least if you reside in the states, you need to apply w/ the gov't (fee) BEFORE buying. Once the approval comes through, you buy the rig, ship it to the US, where the registered importer takes delivery of it and is responsible for getting it up to US specs. You have to make sure they file the paperwork, as I've heard of a number of cases of negligent RI's who never filed their paperwork, then months later, the feds come knocking on your door and confiscate your vehicle, all because the RI was too lazy/greedy and said they filed the paperwork, but really didn't.

Beowulf, it's like the one on the left. I'll need to keep a lookout for the diff lockers. It'll be a real help down here in rainy season when it's all like gumbo mud. My BJ60 doesn't have lockers at it can be a problem.

Jim_Chow, as for importing it to the states, that is not my intention at this time. We are working here in Guatemala and the RSO at the embassy recommends that we have Guatemalan registration so we blend in better (it also allows us to buy full insurance rather than just liability). That requires officially importing my '82 BJ60 with a hefty $3000 - 4000 price tag! In several years when/if we do go back I'll worry about importation at that time but till then we'd be in Guatemala with vacation trips stateside.

Cool! I'd say 15k would be reasonable. But who really knows. What does the market you are in say?

In the UK that would probably go for around 10K pounds sterling.

I just paid 7K for my '93 HDJ80 with 140K miles on the clock, VX trim, leather and front and rear diff locks which was about on the money for what they tend to go for on a 93 plate. Saw a couple of '95/'96 ones earlier with around 120K miles and these were going for 10K which was a bit steep with the mileage.
