Early 2008s had head gasket issues.
2012 was the refresh year for the 2nd Gen brought new headlights, grill and a secondary air pump that sucks. It is the same pump that always fails on Tundras. There is a warranty extension. 2012 is the worst year. 2013s have a shut down run cycle for the pump the dries it out. 2012s go thru valves every 50k. 13-15 do it 80-100k. I have a 12 with 170k on it. Here are also delete kits out there for the pump.

Beyond that, look for rust. The most common place is the passenger rail up front by the cat

Was the air pump problem on the v6 only?

I've got a 2012 with the 2.7 and haven't heard of this problem. I hear the air pump make a swish sound about 10-20 seconds after cold start since new, but I'm pretty sure that's normal for my tacoma. I haven't had any problems other than battery replacement and new front rotor and pads since new with 75k so far.

not sure about the 2.7. The sucking noise on start up is 100% normal function. At 170k I have done the valves on that pump, two front wheel bearings and an AC compressor. Plus normal tires, brakes, fluids.

Ok guys. I own a Landcruiser 60 series so I’m on the forum. Jumping over here to get your opinions on Tacoma’s. I am interested buying one but don’t want a brand new one. Way too expensive. What years and models are y’all liking these days? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thx

what did you buy?
I loved my 1st gens, the engine, style, interior, the way they where over built. Not a fan of the style, inside & out of the 2nd gen, but they seem to have a lot going for them, never owned one. I now own a 3rd gen, 2020 Quicksand TRD OR, jury still out. I would of loved a 1st gen, but I need to tow about 5000lbs a couple times a year.

Everyone will recommend what they drive. My recommendation would be to drive a used 2nd gen, and then a new 3rd gen.

2nd gen has a couple things going for it: 4.0 v6 being the main attraction.

3rd gen engine torque curve is strange. Makes torque at much higher RPMs. The gearing is sensitive to changes in tires. Its like a Camry with a truck bed IMO. Interior is nicer, but also has more gizmos to fail if you plan on keeping the vehicle for a substantial amount of time.

I personally went with the 2nd gen. Very happy with he choice.

I'm partial to 1st Gen. Still running strong.
