Hi guys,
Thanks to the corporate generosity of Skybus.com giving away transcontinental flights for $50:eek:, my wife & I will be visiting your lovely area at the end of January.
No firm plans, just visiting friends out at Point Loma for a few days, :)

What kinds of things should a car junky see while in SD?

Any free/cheap cultural must-do things?

Anybody wanna meet up  or give us a narrated sightseeing tour?
<Jim Carrey> I'll be your dam tour guide on the dam tour. </> :D

Post up or email me if you have any info.

Last time I visited there ( which is funny cuz I was born there) we went on an aircraft carrier that is open to the public and I really enjoyed it.

The zoo is world class, maybe one of the worlds best.

The animal park in San Pasquall (sp?) is also very good.

I'm sure there are tons of things, it is a huge city now. Those are just a couple things I remember.

Jon,
Thanks for the reply. We are planning on seeing the USS Midway. Other friends have also recommended it.

I'll probly also spend time standing on a busy streetcorner, watching all the rust-free old cars drive by.:)

Any other Cruiserheads in SD?

Jim,

Most of the So Ca TLCA members live up in the Orange County area about 60-70 miles or so north of San Diego. I know there are some members of the SoCal 80's group that are in San Diego. You may want to try cross posting on their club page.

Some places that are free and nice to visit are: Old Town, Gas Lamp District, La Jolla, Coronado, Torrey Pines State Beach (check out the gliders or the naked people...), and Tijuana (not sure how nice to visit...) is not too far. Good luck and have fun!

Chris

Chris,
Thanks for the suggestions. Wife will enjoy the older districts. I will put Torrey Pines on my list. If there was a way to get a 2M RC glider on the airliner, I'd bring one.

Tijuana is o.k. if you have not been there. I wouldn't drive. You can take a bus but you have to walk back through customs. I have not been there since 9-11 so I don't know what the customs wait is like now.

There is a definite "tourist district" which is safe enough. If you've never been to a big Mexican border town it is interesting, for a couple hours anyway.

TJ would be OK during the day, but definitely not at night. Lots of unsavory types after dark.
The Zoo, Sea World, Balboa Park has some museums and lots of old buildings.
Some casinos, the beach, Hotel Del, Missions, and the desert is only a few hours away.

You will no doubt want to make a pilgimage to Burbank. I've got a few souveniers for you!;)

Mark,
Would love to come up there, but I'll hafta see if I can steal the TDI to make that trip.
We got our "rental" FJ60 driveable, but it's still not something that's good to run 5Hrs up & down the interstate.:frown:

If you just want to meet somewheres in between, I'm up for that too. You've got my #.
