Getting a 89' FJ62 on wed. hopefully.. I am already thinking of the mods to get. I was wondering what size tires should I get 33's or 35's? It is stock so the logical size would be 33's I would imagine..Would 33's on a stock 62 be a dog on the freeway? Any suggestions? Where can I get Black Rock Crawler rims w/ tire packege?

On a stock 62, 31x10.5s or 33x9.5s will fit on the wheels and under the wheel wells.

When I had stock 4.11 gears, I didn't like my 33s at all. It was definitely a dog, especially on any hills of significance. Also, the shift points are all jacked up with 33s and 4.11 gears, IMHO. I'm very happy with my 4.56 gears.

I think 35s are a no go on a stock 62, unless you like lots of rubbage.

i agree witht he 33's being sloooow on hills. I have a long uphill stretch of freeway towards my house that i dread.

would 4.56 gears actually help with this situation?

Absolutely, the lower gears move the engine's powerband back where is should be.

If you live where the hills are a min then 33's and stock gearing is bearable. But much hills and it just plain stinks. Mine are wider though, so I am sure the extra weight can make it a little worse.

I have the 31x10.5's on b/f my lift and they were great, and looked right on a stock rig IMHO.

I second the need for gears if you live in mountains, i have 34s on my rig and when i hit a decent mountain the speedo just drops. It would probably be better with a 33, but its still inadequate gearing for anything hilly in my opinion. As far as tire choice goes, 33x10.50 seems like the agreed upon largest size for a stock 60. I ran 30 inch ATs for a little while, handles well but looks a little dinky on a truck as big as a 60.

With 33's, not only will the mountains slow you down, but you'll be in third in a heavy headwind. With 35's, you'll want to sell your truck. You would need considerable lift for 35's, and at least 2.5" with 33's. Start with the basics, not "how big of a tire can I put on how fast". Research, due diligence, check out engine, tranny, driveline first, make sure all lights, accessorys, are working, check out your brakes (big problem with larger tires), then look at the different lift kits available and the size wheel/backspacing you need, then finally the brand/tread pattern tires you want and can afford. This will save you alot of grief young grasshopper... :)

I am sorry I was not more specific. I wanted to know what size tire to go with a 4" Man A Fre lift (OME-reverse shackle) on stock gearing-that is what I meant. Will the stock gearing 4.11's be up for some good wheelin with 33's. Or will you feel like you don't have enough power for those steep inclines?

I had 33's on my 80 for awhile, but you 1fzfe does make more power than the 3FE...I have since added 35's with 4.88's on my 80 series

i live down in los altos, and for freeway driving around the bay 33x9.5 bfg at kos are doing fine by me. don't be in a hurry and you'll be fine. i've taken the 62 to tahoe once and the hills on 80 were spent mostly in the slow lane.

i've never taken it wheeling, too many things to fix to make it reliable in the 1.5 years i've had it. i imagine 35s are not a good idea off road till you regear

baldredhead, I seen your pics and your cruiser looks nice..I like the the tall skinny look with the BFG a/t's. That's the tire size I am going to get, but I most likely get mud terrains...

I dont feel like im short on gear when i put it in 4low, i find i have issues with the gearing onroad but have few complaints offroad. There is still enough gear to power up steep hills with 34s and stock gearing. If youre doing the MAF 4 inch kit id say go with 35s, if it rubs you can always put an inch of body lift on it, or just do a little trimming. Ive got a little over 3 inches of lift SUA and one inch of body and i clear all the way around. I had to trim the front fenders but that was no biggie.

I think 4.11s are great with 33s. The combo makes 3rd gear useful on highway hills and I can cruise easy at 70-80mph in 4th. The 3FE was made to rev higher than the 2F and seems quite happy in 3rd gear well into 65mph.

Offroad the setup is fine. The auto makes up plenty for lack of additional low gearing. Very point and shoot. Just for kicks I ran McGrew entirely in 2wd high and never had a problem with control or lack of grunt. Also ran Hell's Revenge and Fins&Things in Moab in 2wd, adding low for descents a couple times.

with a 4" lift from MAF is a totaly diferent story ..

some questions .. did you like rocks . ? ( lot of flex ) or mud .. or maybe expedition rig only .. in 2nd and 3rd cases .. 35" would be fine.

Second part .. gearing .. 33" 4.56 nd you gonna have a god performance rig with your stock auto tranny ..

35" for sure 4.88 !

  Crazy!!

After doing some more research on the whole lift subject, i am thinking of just running the basic 2.5 OME w/Dakar springs that Man A fre.. After all these posts I am going to run 33" tires and that lift should be enough to cover the lift, right? Also I would save about 800.00 bucks and can get an ARB at the same time...

you're too kind, it's a well used driver showing some age

anyway, if i had to do it again i'd go for the 10.5 somethings on wider rims. i don't think there is any safety issue, but the skinny tires + narrow rims have an unique feel to them that i'm not fond of, corners that is, straight away is fine. as it is now i'm looking for a wider rim to run with the 9.5s hoping it will eliminate some of the feeling i don't like.

currently my truck is undergoing a knuckle rebuild, i don't expect to be done for 2 more weeks cuz of my time restreictions and the damn rain (wish it would only rain the day before i go to tahoe  ) but when i'm done you're welcome to take a test drive and feel it for yourself

I got 33's with the stock 4:11 gears and I think they are fine. Going up hills is a little slow but the car I drove before was a fj40 with stock gearing which was way slower. Wheeling with the gears is fine I have not ran into anything that will be cured by different gears. The gears is just what you prefer becuase there are going to be people who will hate that gearing and people that are fien with it. Just try it out and see what you think.

I really think that advice to get your cruiser mechanicals 'right' before you do any mods is correct. And smart. Lifting a truck 4" and installing 33's or 35's before you are really familiar with it is bad ju-ju.

Tune the truck, fix all the delayed maintenance items, drive it, then think lift and bigger tires. I think you'll find that - cosmetics aside - the truck will do much better with a modest lift and 31X10.50 - or 32X11.50 when you are running stock gearing.

But maybe you just wanna look cool with big tires, and are willing to put up with all the shortcomings.

This is a great thread, esp since I have a FJ62 and was considering going up from 31's to 33's soon (still trying to figure out which now that the BFG A/T size I wanted may be no more).

What are some of the downsides for a DD with 4.56's? More revs on the highway? Or would the difference in tire and gearing cancel themselves out so that it would drive the same?
